Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to relieve him of his ministerial responsibilities and let him give up his Rajya Sabha membership, so that he can work full-time for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Murugan said, “With humility and a grateful heart, I therefore request you to relieve me of my responsibilities as Minister of State and permit me to relinquish my membership of the Rajya Sabha, so that I may dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the party in Tamil Nadu.”
Explaining his plans, Murugan said, “I want to go to every village and every street, meet our people, stand beside our karyakartas and help expand the party’s presence in every part of the State.”

Citing the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the state, he wrote, “The love and hope I witnessed during your recent visit have strengthened my conviction that there is much more we can achieve in Tamil Nadu. I wish to devote my full time and energy to preparing the party for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.”
In the letter, Murugan also spoke of his modest background. “I do not come from a political family. I come from a very poor family,” he wrote, adding, “My parents, who worked as daily wage labourers and cattle grazers, continue to lead a simple life in Konur village. They could never have imagined that their son would one day serve in the Union Government.”
