Washington – US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Houthi militants, who control large swaths of Yemen, are "acting very badly" as the fallout from the US-Iran conflict spills over into the wider Middle East.
"The Houthis have been quiet for a long time, but they've come back, and it's probably at the behest of Iran," the president said.
Trump explained that he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, indicating that he would "make a decision on Iran very soon."
He added that he "might" ask Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to intervene and support Saudi interests.
"I think President Erdoğan will grant my request," he continued.
The group has recently escalated its attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The Houthis also launched attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh in the past few days, killing 13 people, injuring more than 300 others, and closing the airspace over the Saudi capital.
