Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy would like Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique to take charge at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are going through a managerial dilemma once again, with Michael Carrick struggling to secure results since taking charge as permanent manager.
Carrick guided his team to third place in the Premier League table last season, but the English giants are currently 13th in the league after seven games this campaign. United are winless in the last seven games in all competitions, four of which have been defeats.
The Red Devils have undergone multiple managerial changes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, but are yet to reclaim their glory days. With Carrick failing to live up to expectations, several candidates have been touted as possible replacements.
Meanwhile, United have had their eyes on Enrique for a while, but a move has never materialised. McCarthy believes that the Spaniard is the ideal candidate to get the club back to their heyday.
United urged to move for Enrique
Speaking to SportyTV, McCarthy pointed out that Enrique is the perfect replacement for Carrick but acknowledged that convincing him to leave PSG will not be easy. He said: “[Carrick is] a young manager, and even if you go and change now, who are you going to get in his place?”
“For me, the most deserving manager that I would love to see at Man United is Luis Enrique, but he ain’t going to leave PSG. I wouldn’t do that if I were him. They have the money, but I think you’d be a nutcase if you left what is being built at PSG to come to Man United.”
McCarthy went on to criticise United’s recruitment strategy, adding: “There’s no consistency because when you do well, you’ve only done well, not amazing. You have to recruit better; you have to add quality to the team that’s done well.”
“Every single time some sort of stability comes, you see the following season there aren’t enough quality players brought in to create competition and strengthen the side.”
United need to perform better in the transfer market
The former striker went on to suggest that United’s lack of planning in the transfer market has hurt the club. He continued: “We’ve (Man Utd) done well, so we keep the same team. We’ve got to provide competition for the players that we have.”
“So that’s why they keep strengthening the team, and Man United don’t seem to do that very well when they’re on the back of a good season; then they rest on their laurels, and instead of adding to help those players now to elevate them, they just keep it the same.”
“Then you have shortcomings in the new season, and everybody kind of seems to pass you by, and I think that’s what they need to try and change: a better recruitment structure and a more consistent basis.”
Final Thoughts
Enrique would certainly have been a fantastic option for United, but he appears to be beyond INEOS’ reach at the moment. Meanwhile, the Red Devils will be planning to improve the squad in the winter, with Sporting’s Flavio Goncalves reportedly on their wish list.
