BUKIT MERTAJAM: A company director was charged at the magistrate's court here today with cheating a businessman over a RM1.5 million loan agreement seven years ago.
Pon Chee Weng, 65, pleaded not guilty to dishonestly deceiving a 45-year-old man into signing an agreement stating that Pon had extended a RM1.5 million loan to him.
The act induced the victim to believe the loan existed, exposing him to financial liability under the agreement and resulting in financial loss.
The offence was allegedly committed at Jalan Kota Permai, Bukit Mertajam, on May 11, 2019.
The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison term of between one and 10 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Zulfadli Hassan prosecuted, while the accused was represented by lawyers Mohd Hasanuddin Mohd Yusoff and Syairah Atiqah Mustaffa Bakri.
During proceedings, Zulfadli offered bail at RM20,000 and requested that the court retain the accused's passport until the disposal of the case, along with a condition to report to the nearest police station monthly.
However, Hasanuddin pleaded for minimal bail, assuring that his client would comply with all conditions set.
The court allowed bail at RM18,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station every two months without surrendering his passport.
The court fixed Dec 17 for mention.
