NFT marketplaces once attracted billions in speculative trading, but declining demand, unsustainable incentives and weak business models have forced prominent operators to close. Recent shutdowns show that high transaction volumes do not necessarily translate into lasting revenue or genuine collector participation.
Blur's Collapse Exposes Unsustainable Trading Models
Blur, previously a leading Ethereum NFT marketplace, announced plans to close its website on November 12, 2026. Its Blend lending service will also stop arranging new loans, although underlying Ethereum contracts will remain operational. According to CoinDesk, Blur's monthly trading volume plunged from approximately USD 1.43 billion in March 2023 to below USD 7 million in March 2026, a decline exceeding 99.5%.
Despite reporting more than USD 7.4 billion in lifetime trading, the zero-fee marketplace recorded no protocol transaction-fee revenue over three years. Trading incentives attracted activity without establishing a dependable marketplace income stream. The shutdown also follows the announced closure of Blast, a related blockchain project whose deposited assets fell from more than USD 2 billion to USD 32 million.
NFT Trading Fell from Peak Levels
The wider NFT market experienced a prolonged contraction. According to CryptoSlam, September 2026 NFT sales totaled USD 167 million across 2.9 million transactions. In January 2022, monthly sales reached approximately USD 6 billion across 13.7 million transactions. The comparison shows how sharply speculative demand has declined.
However, weaker dollar volumes do not mean all participation disappeared. DappRadar reported 18.1 million NFTs sold during the third quarter of 2025, compared with seven million in the first quarter. Trading wallets increased from 1.66 million to 2.14 million, suggesting purchases became more concentrated among participants.
Nifty Gateway and Binance Exit NFT Services
Gemini-owned Nifty Gateway announced its closure in January 2026, citing a shift toward Gemini's broader product strategy. It moved into withdrawal-only mode and later detailed arrangements to preserve NFT media and metadata.
Binance also discontinued its centralized NFT service in July 2026, directing customers to transfer eligible assets into compatible wallets. These exits demonstrate that established brands cannot sustain marketplaces without sufficient demand, retention and operating returns. Creators also face reduced royalties when platforms compete on low fees.
Final Thoughts
NFT marketplaces need durable buyer demand, transparent fees and reliable asset access rather than temporary trading incentives. Blur's decline and major platform exits demonstrate the dangers of prioritizing volume over profitability. For collectors, independent custody and dependable metadata storage remain essential protections when marketplace websites disappear.
