HOUSTON — Prairie View A&M and Alabama State entered the 2026 season as the SWAC’s preseason division favorites. Yet, at the midway point, neither team sits atop its division standings.
As Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson stated during Monday’s SWAC Coaches Weekly Media Session, “It’s 4th and 1” for the Panthers.
In many ways, Alabama State faces the same predicament. However, Jackson "shook up" his coaching staff, reassigning his OC and DB coaches before their Week 7 matchup versus Alcorn State.
Prairie View A&M was picked to repeat as the conference’s Western Division champion, receiving 19 of 24 first-place votes from the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Alabama State received 16 first-place votes to win the Eastern Division.
However, both programs enter Saturday having lost their past two conference games, putting them in increasingly difficult positions.
Prairie View A&M (2-5, 2-2 SWAC) hosts Alcorn State (4-3, 2-1) for Homecoming, while Alabama State (3-3, 1-2) travels to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-2, 1-1) for the Golden Lions’ Homecoming.
Another loss would not mathematically eliminate either team, but it would leave the preseason favorites needing significant help from other conference opponents to reach the SWAC Championship Game.

Prairie View A&M: A Division Game With No Margin for Error
Prairie View A&M is the defending SWAC champion.
Head coach Tremaine Jackson’s Panthers defeated Jackson State 23-21 in last season’s SWAC Championship Game before falling 40-38 to South Carolina State in a four-overtime Celebration Bowl thriller.
This season, the Panthers are 0-3 in nonconference competition, with losses to Tarleton State, Baylor and Stephen F. Austin.
Prairie View A&M opened SWAC play with consecutive victories over Texas Southern (52-14) and Grambling State (21-14).
Then came two damaging defeats.
Mississippi Valley State stunned the Panthers 28-27 on Oct. 3. A week later, Southern defeated Prairie View A&M 28-14 at Panther Stadium.
Those losses erased the Panthers’ early conference momentum and made Saturday’s Western Division matchup against Alcorn State more important.
A Prairie View A&M victory would improve its conference record to 3-2 and drop Alcorn State to 2-2.
More importantly, the Panthers would own head-to-head victories over both teams currently tied for first in the West, Grambling State and Alcorn State.
However, another defeat would drop Prairie View A&M to 2-3 in SWAC competition, while Alcorn State would improve to 3-1 and hold the head-to-head advantage.
It also would mark the Panthers’ second consecutive home loss.
Alcorn State’s Offense Presents a Serious Challenge
Alcorn State has scored at least 43 points in all three of its conference games.
The Braves defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 53-51 and Texas Southern 43-40 before losing a 63-59 shootout to Grambling State.
Last week, Alcorn State routed Arkansas Baptist 63-7.
The Braves’ explosive offense presents another significant challenge for a Prairie View A&M defense that has allowed 56 points during its two-game losing streak.
Following Saturday’s contest, Prairie View A&M travels to East Texas A&M on Oct. 24 before an open date on Oct. 31.
The Panthers close their SWAC schedule against Alabama A&M at home, followed by road games at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama State.
The path to defending their championship remains open, but the Panthers cannot afford another costly conference defeat.
Alabama State: Running Out of Room in the SWAC East
Alabama State’s championship aspirations have taken a significant hit following consecutive conference losses by a combined seven points.
The Hornets fell 16-10 at Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 3 before suffering a heartbreaking 28-27 Homecoming defeat to Florida A&M last week.
Those defeats could become especially costly if the Eastern Division race requires head-to-head tiebreakers.
Alabama State already has losses against two divisional opponents, while its 41-15 victory over Mississippi Valley State remains its lone Eastern Division win.
Saturday’s game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff is a crossover matchup, but it still counts toward the SWAC standings.
Jackson State, Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State each enter the weekend with one conference loss.
Another defeat would drop Alabama State to 1-3 in league play, leaving the Hornets two losses behind those programs if the leaders remain at one loss.
With four conference games remaining afterward, Alabama State would need a near-perfect finish and favorable results elsewhere.
A victory, however, would keep head coach Eddie Robinson Jr.'s team within reach of the division leaders.
The Hornets still have direct opportunities against Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic on Oct. 31 and Jackson State on Nov. 14.
Alabama State also travels to Texas Southern on Nov. 7 before closing the regular season at home against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 21.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff Is No Easy Homecoming Opponent
The Golden Lions were projected to finish last in the SWAC Western Division, but their 3-2 record suggests a team exceeding preseason expectations.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Southern 41-10 in Baton Rouge on Oct. 3.
Its only conference loss came in a 53-51 shootout against Alcorn State.
The Golden Lions also enter Saturday following an open date, giving them additional time to prepare for the Hornets.
Alabama State will need to avoid another slow offensive performance and find a way to finish a close contest.
What Does the HBCU Legends BC+ Model Predict?
The HBCU Legends BC+ predictive model favors Prairie View A&M against Alcorn State while projecting a nearly even contest between Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Alcorn State at Prairie View A&M
- BC+ projected winner: Prairie View A&M
- Projected margin: 8.5 points
- Win probability: 70%
Prairie View A&M’s 2-5 overall record understates its BC+ rating.
Three of the Panthers’ losses came against Tarleton State, Baylor, and Stephen F. Austin, opponents outside SWAC competition.
The model accounts for those opponents' strength when evaluating Prairie View A&M’s overall performance.
Alabama State at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
- BC+ projected winner: Arkansas-Pine Bluff
- Projected margin: 1.3 points
- Win probability: 53%
Alabama State enters as a slight underdog, largely because of the venue.
On a neutral field, BC+ would favor the Hornets by approximately one point.
The narrow projection underscores how important turnovers, special teams, and late-game execution could become Saturday.
Other SWAC Games That Could Impact the Division Races
Grambling State at Alabama A&M
- BC+ favorite: Alabama A&M by 5.3 points.
- Impact on Prairie View A&M: A Grambling State loss would help the Panthers in the Western Division race.
- Impact on Alabama State: An Alabama A&M loss would benefit the Hornets in the East.
This crossover matchup carries implications for both preseason division favorites.
Florida A&M at Jackson State
- BC+ favorite: Jackson State by 13.4 points.
- Impact on Alabama State: A Florida A&M upset would help the Hornets gain ground on Jackson State.
- Tiebreaker consideration: Florida A&M already owns a head-to-head victory over Alabama State.
A Rattlers victory would help Alabama State in one respect while strengthening another team that already defeated the Hornets.
Bethune-Cookman at Mississippi Valley State
- BC+ favorite: Bethune-Cookman by 4.8 points.
- Impact on Alabama State: One Eastern Division contender will absorb another conference loss.
- Head-to-head implications: Alabama State defeated Mississippi Valley State but lost to Bethune-Cookman.
The outcome could become important if multiple teams finish with identical conference records.
The Bottom Line: It’s Fourth-and-1 for Both Favorites
Preseason predictions are great to have, but they mean little when the conference championship race tightens.
Prairie View A&M and Alabama State were expected to compete for their respective division titles. Instead, both programs enter Saturday fighting to avoid a third consecutive conference defeat.
For Prairie View A&M, the remaining matchups against Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff represent opportunities to influence the Western Division race directly.
Alabama State still has Alabama A&M and Jackson State ahead, but the Hornets’ earlier losses to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M have already complicated their championship pursuit.
Neither program is mathematically eliminated with another defeat, but their postseason dreams could be hanging by a thread.
As Jackson said, “It’s 4th and 1.”
For the Panthers and Hornets, Saturday is about more than winning another football game. It’s about keeping their SWAC championship hopes alive.
Can both preseason favorites convert when the stakes are highest?
We shall see.
