Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece is using its stronger position in Europe to benefit both Greek and European citizens.
In his weekly review, he highlighted three Greek proposals that received backing from EU leaders at the recent Summit:
- An emergency adjustment of European fiscal rules so countries with surpluses, like Greece, can provide targeted support to households and businesses during the energy crisis.
- A European mechanism to counter hybrid threats on the migration front, such as those seen in Evros in 2020 and recently in Ceuta, Spain.
- A stricter framework of age limits for children’s access to social media.
“All of these are Greek proposals that are becoming European policies,” Mitsotakis said. “Europe must move faster on all three fronts.”
He also outlined domestic measures against the energy crisis. Heating oil is being subsidised by 40 cents per litre, shared between the state and refineries, and the heating allowance is rising by 30%. This brings the price to €1.55 per litre (around €1.35 for those receiving the allowance), supporting nearly 1.2 million households. Motor fuels will see temporary cuts of 20 cents on diesel and 10 cents on unleaded petrol until October 31, applied directly at the pump.
Mitsotakis said the government will continue monitoring international developments and keep reserves for further support if needed.
