The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has confirmed that the Leone Stars’ home fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers will be played in Morocco after efforts to secure a venue closer to home proved unsuccessful.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday, 17 November 2026, in Morocco, following the failure of alternative arrangements to host the encounter in neighbouring Guinea or Liberia.
According to the SLFA, Guinea was unable to accommodate the fixture because of a scheduling conflict involving its national Under-23 team, while Liberia had another match scheduled at its stadium on the same date.
The Association subsequently approached the Confederation of African Football (CAF), requesting that the fixture be moved to Monday, 16 November, in an attempt to find a venue closer to Sierra Leone and make it easier for local supporters to attend.
However, the SLFA said DR Congo did not agree to the proposed date change and maintained its position to play on the original date of 17 November, in line with the CAF fixture schedule.
Following the unsuccessful efforts to secure a nearby venue and change the date, Morocco was selected to host the encounter.
The SLFA expressed regret that the match would not be played closer to home, acknowledging that the decision would make it more difficult for Sierra Leonean fans to attend and support the national team.
The Association apologised for any inconvenience the arrangement may cause and thanked supporters for their patience, understanding and continued backing of the Leone Stars.
The SLFA also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the national team as it continues its campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
