Despite Drake Maye not giving up a turnover in his last two games, the rest of the Patriots haven't been as lucky. Coach Mike Vrabel believes that needs to be addressed.
During Sunday’s 26-19 win over the Jets, the Patriots had three fumbles, resulting in two turnovers. TreVeyon Henderson lost the ball, while DeMario Douglas had it punched out of his hands. The Jets used those opportunities to score.
"We turn the ball over at a historic rate, and it’s ridiculous," Vrabel said on WEEI’s "The Greg Hill Show" via Audacy. "It’s an embarrassment."
On the season, the Patriots have turned the ball over 13 times. Seven have come via interceptions and six via fumbles. It’s the second-most behind the Chargers’ 15. The team allows the third-most fumbles, and their -6 turnover differential ranks higher than two teams.
Initially, Maye was the only one to worry about after throwing seven turnovers in the first four games. However, he’s looked exceptional the last few games.
The Patriots will need to tighten things up before they face the Bears on Thursday night. It’s a short turnaround game after hosting New York. The Bears rank above the Patriots in turnover differential (-2), and Chicago’s defense gives up the sixth-fewest points per game, one spot below New England.
"It’s a physical football team," Vrabel said. "So we better be prepared."
