Elmina Sharks have pledged to honour goalkeeper William John Donkoh’s contract and provide further support following the amputation of his left leg after a motor accident in Cape Coast.
The club’s Communications Department confirmed in a statement on Thursday, October 22, that Donkoh sustained severe injuries in the accident on Tuesday, October 20, and underwent surgery on Wednesday night.
Speaking on Sports Daily, Elmina Sharks Public Relations Officer Kingsley Smith Arthur assured that the club would continue to meet its contractual obligations to the goalkeeper, who joined the side during the summer transfer window.
“The club management and the board, led by Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, have pledged to honour the contract. Let me put on record that Donkoh just joined us this summer. He had only played two games,” Arthur said.
Donkoh featured in Elmina Sharks’ match against Future Stars on Sunday, October 18, 2026, where he delivered an impressive performance, according to the club’s PRO.
The game against Future Stars was his second game for his new club, where he kept his first clean sheet.
Arthur revealed that the goalkeeper had personally promised the club’s president to keep clean sheets in the next five matches.
“He played last Sunday against Future Stars, a game in which he played really, really well and promised Paa Kwesi Nduom personally to keep a clean sheet in the next five games,” he added.
Beyond honouring his contract and covering his salary, Elmina Sharks have also expressed their willingness to help Donkoh and his family explore alternative livelihood opportunities if necessary.
“As a club, we have pledged to honour the contract as it is, and we are going to cover his salary and any other obligations that we have.
“Beyond that, we will try and support the family if there is the need to get an alternative livelihood for Donkoh. As a club, we are willing to support that,” Arthur stated.
He added that the club was committed to providing the goalkeeper with the support he would need to rebuild his life following the accident.
“So everything that Donkoh would need, as a club, we are willing to support him to the maximum to get his life back,” he said.
Elmina Sharks have also appealed to the football community to keep Donkoh and his family in their prayers and respect their privacy during this difficult period.
The club says further updates on his situation will be communicated in due course.
