Liverpool 4–3 Villarreal – Champions League Post-Match Report
By Steven Smith
After a heartening victory away to Brentford in the Premier League, Liverpool returned to Anfield for a Champions League encounter against Villarreal. The Reds were looking to build on their European thrashing of LASK, but what followed was a chaotic seven-goal thriller that tested the team’s character, exposed familiar defensive concerns and ultimately showcased the extraordinary potential of Rio Ngumoha.

Andoni Iraola’s side recovered from a dreadful opening half-hour to turn the game around, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring twice and Florian Wirtz adding a fourth. However, conceding three goals and allowing Villarreal to threaten throughout meant this was far from a complete performance.

First Half
Liverpool could hardly have made a worse start. Just four minutes into the contest, Georges Mikautadze put Villarreal ahead, leaving the home side chasing the game before they had properly settled. The early goal exposed Liverpool’s lack of defensive organisation, and the Reds struggled to establish control in the opening stages.
Things deteriorated further in the 29th minute when Sergi Cardona doubled Villarreal’s advantage, assisted by Nathan-Dylan Saliba. At 2–0 down, Liverpool looked vulnerable, short of confidence and unable to cope with the visitors’ movement. For the opening half-hour, this was a deeply concerning performance from Iraola’s side.

Yet Rio Ngumoha was one of the few players offering genuine hope. The teenage winger repeatedly looked to take defenders on, attack space and create something from nothing. While his teammates struggled to find their rhythm, he played with the confidence and directness Liverpool desperately needed.
The turning point arrived in the 36th minute. Kostas Tsimikas supplied the assist for Alexis Mac Allister, whose goal brought Liverpool back into the contest. It was a much-needed response, giving Anfield something to believe in and allowing the home side to finish the half with greater purpose.
Then came the equaliser in stoppage time. Ngumoha delivered another decisive contribution, setting up Ronald Araújo to make it 2–2 in the 45th minute plus added time. From looking completely out of the game, Liverpool had dragged themselves level before the interval.
It was a remarkable turnaround, although the defensive performance remained a major concern. Liverpool had shown their attacking quality, but they needed a far more controlled second half if they were to complete the comeback.
Second Half
Liverpool emerged with renewed belief, and the introduction of Florian Wirtz for Araújo at half-time added another creative dimension to the attack. The Reds began to move the ball with greater purpose, while Mac Allister increasingly took control of the midfield.
Ngumoha continued to be the outstanding attacking threat. His direct running and ability to beat defenders repeatedly unsettled Villarreal, and in the 65th minute he produced another important contribution. The winger supplied the assist for Mac Allister’s second goal, completing the turnaround and putting Liverpool 3–2 ahead.
Mac Allister’s brace was a reward for his improved influence as the game progressed. After a difficult opening period for the team, the Argentine grew into the contest and demonstrated his quality in front of goal. His ability to combine midfield control with decisive attacking contributions proved crucial.
Four minutes later, Liverpool extended their lead. Cody Gakpo provided the assist for Wirtz, who finished to make it 4–2 in the 69th minute. Anfield had witnessed a remarkable transformation, with Liverpool now seemingly in control after their disastrous start.
However, the Reds could not entirely remove the tension. Villarreal continued to threaten, and Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities remained evident. The visitors eventually found a third goal, ensuring a nervy conclusion and reminding Iraola that his side still have plenty to improve despite their attacking brilliance.
Ngumoha was withdrawn in the 73rd minute, with Bradley Barcola introduced, while Joe Gomez replaced Jacquet. Isak had already come on for Koumas in the 67th minute, and James McConnell later replaced Nyoni. The changes helped Liverpool manage the closing stages, but the contest remained uncomfortable until the final whistle.
The statistics underline Liverpool’s attacking superiority, with 21 shots and an expected-goals figure of 2.37 compared with Villarreal’s 14 shots and 1.58 xG. Nevertheless, conceding three goals at home will concern the coaching staff, particularly after the defensive issues that surfaced against LASK.
Final Thoughts
This was an extraordinary Champions League night at Anfield, but one that offered both encouragement and warning signs. Liverpool showed tremendous character to recover from two goals down, and their attacking players delivered when it mattered. Mac Allister’s brace and Wirtz’s contribution were important, but Ngumoha was the defining figure of the evening.
The teenage winger was sensational, producing two assists and repeatedly taking responsibility when Liverpool needed inspiration. His performance demonstrated why he is such an exciting prospect, particularly in his developing role on the right wing. If he continues to combine that directness with end product, he could become a major weapon for Iraola.
Jérémy Jacquet was again a reassuring presence at the back, while Mac Allister’s second-half display showed his importance to the side. However, the opening 30 minutes were unacceptable, and the defensive errors that allowed Villarreal to score three times cannot be overlooked.
Liverpool’s attacking quality ultimately carried them through, but Iraola will know that better-organised opponents could punish the same mistakes more severely. The Reds have now demonstrated that they can fight back from adversity, but the next step is avoiding the need for such dramatic recoveries in the first place.
My pre-match prediction was Liverpool 3–1 Villarreal. The Reds scored four, conceded three and secured the victory, but the scoreline tells only part of the story. It was an entertaining European comeback, powered by Ngumoha’s brilliance, yet there is plenty for Liverpool to address before their next test.
Steven Smith’s Pre-Match Prediction:
Liverpool 3–1 Villarreal
