The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the death of one of its officers and the serious injury of another following an attack by unidentified armed men in Niger State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, at about 11:30 a.m., when two personnel on routine surveillance patrol were attacked along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis of the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Service identified the deceased officer as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I.U. Babangida, while Inspector A.K. Musa sustained serious injuries but escaped the attack.
Musa is currently receiving medical attention.
The NIS said Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, paying tribute to his sacrifice and commitment to duty.
The Service also extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
It assured both families of its continued support during the difficult period.
The Immigration Service said it was working with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
“We are working closely with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act and ensure that they are brought to justice,” the statement said.
Despite the incident, the Service reaffirmed its commitment to securing the country’s borders, insisting that the attack would not deter its personnel from carrying out their duties.
The statement was signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, at the NIS headquarters in Abuja on October 15, 2026.
