Kuwait City’s historic Sharq Fish Market is set for major modernization drive aimed at upgrading its facilities, improving services and expanding its capacity while preserving its longstanding place in the country’s maritime heritage.
Capital Governor Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah during a field visit to the market saw the development plan. He was briefed on the implementation stages and measures being taken to ensure that commercial activities continue throughout the renovation.
According to a statement from the Capital Governorate, the project includes preparing a temporary market to accommodate vendors and maintain uninterrupted sales while work proceeds at the main facility. The temporary market is scheduled to officially open on Thursday and begin receiving vendors and visitors.
The redevelopment plan covers improvements to infrastructure and service facilities, better entry and exit arrangements, and an expansion in the number of stalls from 214 to more than 240. The changes are intended to increase the market’s capacity and provide a more organized and comfortable environment for fish vendors and shoppers.
Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah stressed the importance of closely monitoring development projects that improve services for citizens and residents. He also highlighted the need for coordination among the relevant authorities to ensure that the work proceeds according to schedule while taking into account the needs of stall owners and protecting the continuity of their businesses.
Emphasizing the market’s historical significance, the governor said its development must strike a balance between modernization and the preservation of its traditional character. Sharq Fish Market remains an important part of Kuwait’s maritime heritage and collective memory.
He commended the efforts of the company implementing the project and the government agencies involved, expressing hope that the redevelopment would enhance the market’s appearance, strengthen its appeal to visitors and bring its facilities in line with contemporary needs without diminishing its historical identity.
