Michael Carrick is under immense pressure after Manchester United’s miserable start to the 2026-27 season.
The Red Devils are winless in seven games across all competitions, and they are currently closer to the Premier League relegation zone than the top four.
United hit a new low with Wednesday’s 4-0 defeat to European minnows Como at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
Carrick could be sacked before Sunday’s home match with Bournemouth.
Below we have listed three potential contenders to replace the 45-year-old as United’s new head coach.
Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe knows the Premier League well, having managed Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
He transformed Newcastle from relegation strugglers into Champions League contenders after taking over as manager in 2021.
The English boss also ended the club’s 70-year wait for a major trophy by leading them to the Carabao Cup triumph in 2025.
Howe is available for hire, having left Newcastle in the summer after the high-profile sales of key players.
Antonio Conte
If the English giants want a manager with a glittering CV, then Antonio Conte looks to be a perfect fit.
The Italian led Chelsea to the Premier League title in his debut season. He has also won Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.
The 57-year-old has made an instant impact at many of his previous clubs, and he is reportedly ready to take over at United.
But the club would be wary of handing Conte the job, as the majority of his previous jobs have ended his acrimony due to his confrontational style.
Fabian Hurzeler
Hurzeler has turned Brighton & Hove Albion into a Premier League force this season, with the Seagulls sitting third in the league with 16 points.
The German has established a reputation as one of the most promising young coaches in Europe.
Hurzeler led St Pauli to Bundesliga promotion and is now working wonders in the English top-flight.
The 33-year-old could be a sensible appointment, but United would have to pay a hefty compensation to prise him away from Brighton.
