The deep pass did not count, but Braylon Staley still liked what it represented.
George MacIntyre gave his receiver an opportunity to win a one-on-one matchup against Arkansas. For Staley, that willingness to trust Tennessee’s playmakers matters as the Vols prepare for Alabama.
“Loved it,” Staley said. “Just him being able to, you know, trust us in one-on-one situations.”
The play was wiped out by an out-of-bounds penalty. Staley said the side angle he watched did not appear to show him stepping out, but he still needed to review the back angle.
Even without the completion, the opportunity reflected something Staley believes can change how opponents defend Tennessee.
One Shot Can Change the Picture
Staley sees Tennessee’s passing and rushing attacks as connected. Success through the air can create room on the ground, while an effective running game can open passing opportunities.
An explosive completion can accelerate that process.
“I think one deep ball can change the way a defense plays against us,” Staley said.
That belief gives Tennessee’s downfield opportunities significance beyond the yards gained. If a defense must account for receivers getting behind its coverage, its approach to containing the rest of the offense can change.
Against Alabama, capitalizing on those chances will require sharp execution. Staley described the Crimson Tide’s secondary as experienced, physical and capable of creating turnovers.
MacIntyre’s Composure Stands Out
Staley offered a positive assessment of MacIntyre’s first career start, praising his composure and ability to take control of the offense.
One important moment came on third-and-seven, when MacIntyre kept the play alive and found Staley for a conversion.
“Just being able to keep the play alive in the pocket,” Staley said, “just keep his eyes downfield and throw the ball.”
The play illustrated the trust Staley wants between Tennessee’s quarterbacks and receivers: extend the opportunity, keep looking and give someone a chance to finish.
He also said the receivers have practiced adjusting when plays extend, whether the quarterback remains in the pocket or moves outside it. Repetitions with both MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon have helped prepare them for those situations.
Receivers Have Work Beyond Catching
Staley’s view of his position extends beyond targets and receptions.
He emphasized the receiving group’s willingness to block and help establish the running game. That physical work, he explained, can contribute to the passing opportunities receivers want.
He also praised a teammate’s pursuit following an Arkansas fumble recovery, calling it “championship effort.”
For players experiencing quieter stretches, Staley’s message was straightforward: remain ready and capitalize when the opportunity arrives.
Keep the Rivalry in Perspective
Staley understands the attention surrounding Tennessee-Alabama. He also knows excitement alone will not win a matchup against a physical secondary.
“You can’t let it get too big,” he said. “I can’t let the moment get too big.”
His approach is to maintain the same competitive mindset and execute his responsibilities.
For Tennessee’s receivers, that means blocking with purpose, staying available when plays break down and finishing opportunities downfield. Staley believes one deep ball can change the complexion of the game. Alabama week is about preparing to make that moment count.
