The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi state, Senator Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, has urged voters to prioritise competence, experience and capacity over political rotation and sectional interests in choosing the state’s next governor.
Nwagu made the call during a press conference at his hometown, Oriuzor, in Ezza North Local Government Area (LGA), where he formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.
The former chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs said the election should be decided on candidates’ records, leadership capacity and development agenda rather than ethnic affiliations or political considerations.
While acknowledging the aspirations of the state’s senatorial zones, ethnic groups and communities, he maintained that competence should not be sacrificed for political rotation.
“The fundamental question before Ebonyi people in 2027 should be: who has the experience, competence, capacity and vision to provide the kind of leadership our state urgently needs?” he asked.
Nwagu identified roads, education, healthcare, employment, security and economic prosperity as priorities shared by the people, irrespective of their backgrounds.
“Development has no tribal identity. Good roads, quality education, standard healthcare, employment opportunities, security and economic prosperity are the common aspirations of every Ebonyi man,” he said.
He pledged to run an issue-based campaign focused on practical governance, responsible planning and measurable results, rather than unrealistic promises.
Nwagu also called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties to embrace peaceful competition, urging politicians to shun violence, intimidation and personal attacks.
“I come in peace, and peace is what I seek for our dear state,” he said, appealing to party members, supporters and voters to demonstrate tolerance and political maturity.
He described the NDC as a platform to rethink governance, address existing shortcomings and chart a new development path for Ebonyi State and the country.
