A popular feminine hygiene brand has been hit with a wave of backlash, following a lawsuit that has accused it of exposing women to potentially carcinogenic chemicals.
The suit alleges that Carefree’s panty liners contained PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), a synthetic “forever chemical” belonging to a group of substances known as PFAS. These chemicals can stay in the body for years and have been linked to several serious health conditions, including cancer. The lawsuit alleges that women who used Carefree products experienced issues ranging from chronic yeast infections to liver disease.
As more women pay attention to the potential health implications, some have decided to seek out organic alternatives. On Amazon, LOLA Cotton Pads have become a popular option among health-conscious shoppers, including editors. A 36-count pack currently retails for $26 on Amazon. According to the brand, LOLA Pads are totally toxin-free and are made with hypoallergenic ingredients.
“I decided to make the switch from Carefree to LOLA months ago,” explained commerce journalist and content strategist Victoria McDonnell. “If we’re committed to buying organic fruit and switching to nontoxic cleaning products, let’s pay attention to the products we use on the most sensitive areas of our bodies, too.”

The brand also claims its products are highly absorbent and comfortable, featuring a unique wing design intended to provide a secure fit and help women stay active throughout the day.
“I love that they’re 100% cotton, and I noticed a difference in quality and comfort immediately. It makes me feel better knowing that they’re made without hormone-disrupting chemicals,” McDonnell added.
Other shoppers have also made the switch to LOLA and say they have no regrets.
“I will never go back to Always. Ladies, your body is a temple. You should treat it as such. This product is organic, comfortable, and doesn’t leak. My daughter won’t use anything else. It’s a win.”
As with many personal care products, it’s important to consult your primary care doctor before making a switch, especially if you have any allergies, sensitivities or underlying health conditions.
