India's stricter cryptocurrency regulations have left many investors wondering what happens to their money when an exchange gets blocked. While restrictions can prevent users from accessing trading platforms or withdrawing funds, a government block does not necessarily mean their cryptocurrency holdings are lost or confiscated.
Why are Crypto Exchanges Getting Blocked in India?
The Indian authorities have stepped up investigations of cryptocurrency exchanges failing to comply with the government's requirements.
The Financial Intelligence Unit of India (FIU-IND) reported that 15 platforms dealing with virtual digital assets were served non-compliance notices on September 9, 2026, including Weex, Blofin, Bitunix, DigiFinex, Pionex, WOO X and WhiteBIT.
The authorities also attempted to restrict their websites and applications. Previously, 25 foreign platforms working with cryptocurrencies were embroiled in a similar issue in October 2025.
The restrictions relate to compliance with the rules of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) related to the identification of customers, monitoring of transactions, and reporting of suspicious activities.
What Happens to Your Crypto Funds?
A major concern for crypto investors is whether their assets will continue to be private after the site is banned. A site shutdown does not automatically mean that users do not own their assets. However, the use of accounts, services and withdrawals can be difficult.
The situation depends on how the exchange deals with its clients’ assets and whether the withdrawal function is still working.
For example, a company restricted from functioning on its site may still execute withdrawals, while one suffering from some technical problems could suspend them for a while.
That is why investors must know the difference between access restrictions, blocked withdrawals and a complete shutdown of the exchange.
How Can Users Access or Recover Their Funds?
If the exchange stops working, users should start by looking at the platform’s own notices and the updates from Indian regulators. When withdrawals are still possible, the user can send the crypto to a different wallet or exchange that is supported, as long as local regulations are followed.
It also helps to keep copies of transaction logs, account records, and the messages that confirm each withdrawal. Do not trust random recovery services or click links that claim they can restore access right away. If withdrawals are paused, the next move should be to reach out to the exchange’s official support.
What About Cryptocurrency Taxes in India?
As per India's Income Tax Department, cryptocurrency transactions usually carry a tax of 1% deducted at source according to Section 194S, provided certain conditions are applicable.
A blocked exchange does not automatically relieve the taxpayer from their tax liabilities, and investors must keep track of their transactions and understand their reporting obligations before making any transfer or sale of cryptocurrency.
Final Thoughts
A cryptocurrency exchange getting blocked in India does not necessarily mean investors lose their funds. However, withdrawal restrictions and limited account access can create problems. Staying informed, maintaining records and using compliant platforms can help investors manage these risks.
