Kathmandu, October 13
Jiwan Bahadur Shahi has been elected joint general secretary of the Nepali Congress at the party’s 15th General Convention.
Shahi, who also leads the Nepali Congress parliamentary party in Karnali Province, was elected joint general secretary representing the disadvantaged region.
The party’s media centre confirmed Shahi’s election based on the final results for the joint general secretary position representing the disadvantaged region.
However, the party’s Central Election Committee has not yet formally announced the final results. According to the Nepali Congress website, 33 of the 6,729 votes cast for the position were invalid.
The website shows that Shahi received 3,906 votes, while his closest rival, Janak Raj Giri, secured 1,376 votes.
Other candidates for the position, Rajan Kunwar and Ram Bahadur Bista, received 324 and 260 votes, respectively, according to the website.
At the party’s 14th General Convention, Shahi had also contested for joint general secretary representing the disadvantaged region as a candidate from former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s faction.
He lost to Badri Prasad Pandey, a candidate from the faction led by Dr Shekhar Koirala.
Shahi, who did not attend the special general convention held in December last year, left the Deuba faction and returned to the party’s mainstream on September 18.
