Ever since the Golden State Warriors repeated as champions in 2017 and 2018, no team has won two titles in a row. In fact, there have been eight different champions since the 2018 Finals, with the most recent champion being the New York Knicks, who won their first title in 52 seasons.
Leading up to the 2026-27 NBA season's opening day, League Commissioner Adam Silver went on Good Morning America to talk about the upcoming season. He spoke about the parity with all the teams winning championships, and the positives that stem from it.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver speaks on why parity is meaningful for the league
Back when the Warriors repeated back in 2017 and 2018, the NBA was extremely different from what it is today. There were plenty of teams that were trying to be competitive, but they just couldn't beat the dominant teams, which were the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers at the time.
Before them were the Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Los Angeles Lakers. All those teams won multiple championships during their heyday, and the Heat and the Lakers even had repeats. That has not happened over the past decade, which just goes to show the quality of teams around the NBA.

While some people might see this as a negative, Silver does not see that perspective at all. He loves what he is seeing from the league's parity, which is a big deal for the NBA and the chances of teams winning championships even if they're not from the biggest of markets.
"It says so much about the level of competition and the parity in this league. It's why I think this is one of the most anticipated seasons because there are so many teams that believe they have a shot this year. When you add that global pool of talent, for people who just love basketball, you can watch any game in any night; there's always something to see," Silver said on Good Morning America about the league's level of competition.
It is hard to argue against Silver's point, but there will be people who will talk about how a certain team dominating would be good for narratives. There will come a time when a team repeats as champions, but at the moment, the parity era in the NBA has led to the sport shining even more due to the quality of basketball around the league.
