SUCCASUNNA – Blake Lieberwirth entered Friday night’s conference showdown against Mount Olive with virtually no varsity passing resume to speak of.
Roxbury’s third-string quarterback had completed just two of three career pass attempts, both coming last season.
Thrown into the spotlight in one of the Gaels' biggest games of the season, Lieberwirth made the most of his opportunity. The junior was flawless through the air, providing a spark that helped Roxbury regain momentum and secure a signature victory.
Behind Lieberwirth’s perfect passing performance, Roxbury, No. 6 in the latest Morris/Sussex Super Top 10, knocked off No. 7 Mount Olive, 26-15, on Oct. 16 in a Super Football Conference crossover at Roxbury High School.
Lieberwirth completed all three of his pass attempts for 56 yards and two touchdowns as the Gaels snapped a three-game losing streak against the Marauders and improved to 6-2 overall. Mount Olive fell to 4-3 with the loss.
The unlikely hero connected on a pair of second-half scoring strikes while Roxbury's defense delivered key stops throughout the night, allowing the Gaels to avenge three consecutive losses in the series.
