The Commanders are in a tough spot.
Washington sits a 1-4-1 and now on a bye, thankful to the NFC East gods that they’re still in the divisional race at all. The Commanders should be optimistic yet still acknowledge that they have a lot of problems on both sides of the ball, in terms of talent, injuries and inexperienced coordinators.
Offensive coordinator David Blough is only 31 years old and made the rapid ascent from assistant quarterbacks coach to the guy calling plays. That seems extreme, but Blough has a sterling reputation with Jayden Daniels and several big-name coaches across the NFL.
Still, this is his first big coaching gig. And, if we’re totally honest, it shows.
There have been moments of brilliance, matched by play calls that’ll raise an eyebrow. Why head coach Dan Quinn didn’t hire a veteran play caller as to help him as an analyst or assistant is beyond comprehension, but he left Blough on his own.
That has created some issues with the execution. We can lump pre-snap penalties into this as well.
The Commanders currently rank No. 19 in total offense and No. 21 in scoring despite having Jayden Daniels under center. That’s not where you want it.
This isn’t a tape breakdown post, but instead a question to the fan base about initial impressions of the offensive coordinator. How has he done so far?
How do you think David Blough has done to this point and what needs to be improved coming out of the bye? Let us know in the article comments below:
