The writing may have been on the wall, but that didn’t make the news any easier to stomach.
On Wednesday, Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, one of the most storied video game studios around. It was known for developing landmark fantasy and science-fiction RPGs throughout its 30 years of operation. Its remaining employees were laid off as part of around 400 job cuts at EA. The next Mass Effect, colloquially called Mass Effect 5, was canceled.
It’s an unceremonious end to a studio that was once at the forefront of choice-based, narrative-focused RPGs. The hundreds of employees who worked on its games over the years brought whole galaxies to life, filling them with beloved characters. Most importantly, BioWare series like Mass Effect and Dragon Age created spaces for players to feel represented and included. It’s not a stretch to say these games changed, or even saved, lives. BioWare’s games are art, and the power that art can have on an individual cannot be quantified.
Of course, studios aren’t monoliths; dozens or hundreds of talented people are behind any name on the door. Some of the people you’re familiar with had already left BioWare to work on other projects, like Casey Hudson and his new studio’s upcoming Star Wars game. Others might be less lucky. The video game industry has been hit hard by mass layoffs over the past four years — which BioWare itself was subject to in 2025 — and, as the number of available jobs for both veteran and up-and-coming developers shrinks, this closure could end up sending many developers into other careers.
The loss of a studio, its history, the jobs it provided, and the art it could have made is always something of a tragedy. For so many of us, the loss of BioWare hurts more than most losses because of how forward-thinking its games were and how beloved they’ve become by fans, who could find themselves represented and included in the studio’s body of work. Only time will tell just what ramifications the loss of BioWare has on the video game industry as a whole.
The hits, and the hate they produced
BioWare is probably best-known for its Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, but it first cut its teeth on other well-regarded RPGs. BioWare developed Baldur’s Gate and its sequel, and that duology really put BioWare on the map. (They also set the foundation for a series that would explode in popularity when Larian released Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023; without BioWare, we wouldn’t have gotten Astarion, Shadowheart, and the rest.) BioWare also gained recognition for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire in the years before the Normandy ever took flight.
In the eyes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age fans, BioWare peaked from 2007 to 2014. It’s kind of wild to think about now — a time when a single AAA game may take five years or more to make — but BioWare released the original Mass Effect trilogy and three Dragon Age games in such a short amount of time. Yes, “BioWare Magic” — a euphemism for crunch and ideas coalescing at the studio at the last minute — had a hand in getting the games out the door so quickly. As did interference from above; EA infamously gave BioWare barely any time at all to finish Dragon Age 2, which limited its scope.
BioWare’s approach to storytelling was innovative, downright groundbreaking for the time, and the games gave each player real control over their respective stories. My Shepard’s path to saving the galaxy was different from yours, even if we both fell in love with the same Turian in Mass Effect 2 and 3. Combined, all those games sold millions of copies, and Dragon Age Inquisition even won Game of the Year honors at the 2014 The Game Awards (technically the first ever GOTY at The Game Awards).
However, the early 2010s wasn’t the rosiest time for BioWare, as attacks came from outside. You can’t talk about Mass Effect without mentioning the highly derided ending of Mass Effect 3. BioWare received so much criticism online — some in good faith, some just straight-up hate mail — that it later patched the ending in response to public feedback. It’s hard to overstate what a watershed moment this was: Gaming fans, were they loud enough, could quite literally change a video game to their collective whims. (The first iteration of Gamergate started just two years later, in 2014.)
It wasn’t just Mass Effect that found itself on the sharp end of the internet’s ire. Fans levied hatred BioWare’s way after Dragon Age 2, and especially toward senior writer Jennifer Hepler. She and her family received death threats after players blamed her for Dragon Age 2’s changed combat.
A decade of misfires
Dragon Age: Inquisition was BioWare’s last critical and commercial success. It came out in 2014.
Mass Effect Andromeda was up next for the studio, and was released in 2017. Despite a notably troubled development cycle, Andromeda probably had the best gameplay of any Mass Effect game, thanks to tightened shooting and movement tech and an expansion of the series’ skill customization options. However, its plot was heavily criticized; players and reviewers alike felt it rehashed story beats from previous games. Its characters also failed to resonate with audiences in the ways that Normandy’s crew did. (That was always going to be a tall task when characters like Tali, Wrex, Thane, and Anderson were so beloved by fans, though many of those characters did have a whole trilogy for audiences to bond with.)
Mass Effect: Andromeda was immediately followed by an experiment called Anthem. Though it looked like the Iron Man game we had always wanted, Anthem was BioWare’s next failure. Its behind-the-scenes story isn’t much different than Andromeda’s as most of Anthem was essentially developed in the year leading up to its release (“BioWare Magic”), and the final product was buggy, grindy, and lacking in anything that make BioWare’s other games so appealing. The gameplay was enjoyable, yes, but a live-service loot shooter was not the strength of a studio known for single-player, story-focused RPGs.
BioWare’s next — and final — game was Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It overcame yet another cycle of development hell to emerge as an actually good game, one that was received well by critics and players. However, it fell short of EA’s sales expectations, and was largely snubbed at that year’s Game Awards. Maybe a sequel to a 10-year-old game was never going to meet anyone’s sales expectations.
BioWare’s fans deserved better too
Because of the lack of a bona fide hit, worry over BioWare’s future festered after it was first announced that private investors, including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, would be purchasing EA last year. Analysts warned EA might look to sell off its studios that don’t print money for it in the ways that its sports franchises do, and, despite BioWare’s storied history, its past decade was marred by underperformance.
Maybe Mass Effect 5 could have been the hit that BioWare needed, but the Bloomberg report that broke the studio closure news said the next sci-fi RPG was still in “early” development despite having been announced in 2020. Developers who worked on Mass Effect 5 have since spoken glowingly of it and about how ambitious it was. A leaked trailer of Mass Effect 5, called Mass Effect Universe, makes it look like an exciting spy thriller. James Bond in space? Who wouldn’t sign up for that? (Private Equity-owned EA, apparently.) Players won’t get the chance to experience Mass Effect Universe for themselves. We’ll just have to watch the trailer on repeat.
Those players have certainly felt wounded by BioWare’s closure. They were worried about BioWare after the EA sale for reasons outside of finances. BioWare’s games were often targeted for their progressive themes; you could have same-sex romances in the Mass Effect trilogy before real-world same-sex marriage was legalized across the United States in 2015. Saudi Arabia isn’t exactly the most progressive state, and fans wondered if what they loved about BioWare’s games — that progressiveness — would make it a target for closure once the sale went through.
The inclusivity through BioWare’s games endeared them to fans. “This game gave so many people the feeling of being represented. I don't think you can underestimate that,” Jennifer Hale told Polygon earlier this year. She voiced Mass Effect’s FemShep, and would have been down to return as the character in Mass Effect 5 if BioWare wanted to bring Shepard back. Now, the developers will never have that chance.
