As the European Union (EU) fully implements the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) starting in August of this year, responding to environmental regulations has emerged as an urgent task for Korean export companies. The Korea International Trade Association is launching the 'PPWR Comprehensive Support Package,' which encompasses everything from practical training to on-site consulting, to reduce the administrative and financial burdens in the field.
This support measure is in line with the trend of tightening regulations aimed at curbing the excessive generation of packaging waste and promoting recycling within the EU. The PPWR strictly restricts the use of packaging materials containing human-harmful substances and heavy metals that exceed standard limits. A survey by the Korea International Trade Association showed that the majority of small and medium-sized enterprises are experiencing significant difficulties in the process of grasping relevant regulatory information or preparing essential documentary evidence.
First, the Korea International Trade Association will conduct a total of three practical training sessions for 200 workers in the cosmetics and food industries, starting from the first week of November. The intention is to select specific industries heavily impacted by the regulation and pass on practical response measures. Along with the training, on-site consulting will be conducted in parallel, where professional consultants directly visit companies to inspect the suitability of packaging materials and help with the preparation of related documents.
Infrastructure will also be established to enable companies to constantly respond to regulatory changes. The Korea International Trade Association plans to produce and distribute a practical guidebook while consistently providing consultation services related to the regulation. Furthermore, it intends to form a task force consisting of internal and external experts to continuously supplement a support system optimized for corporate demands.
Jeong Hee-chul, head of the Trade Promotion Division at the Korea International Trade Association, pointed out that the burden on the export field is increasing due to the tightening of EU environmental regulations and emphasized, "Through this package, we will actively support our companies so that they can equip themselves with the capability to respond to the regulations on their own."
Through this one-stop support system, the Korea International Trade Association plans to focus on maintaining the export competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and overcoming global environmental regulatory barriers.
