North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles into the sea on Monday morning, South Korea's military said.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said various types of missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area. One of them flew more than 900 kilometers (559 miles) before falling into the sea.
Japan's coast guard also detected two objects that were fired from North Korea.
'A show of force'
North Korea has conducted numerous missile tests on more than 10 occasions this year, including four in October alone.
Monday's test came after South Korean South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced the rare test firing of a new hypersonic missile.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff called Noth Korea's latest launch "a show of force in response to the successful test launch of our hypersonic missile, as well as an intentional demonstration of missile capabilities."
The missile tests also come amid the backdrop of rising tensions over a North Korean landmine that exploded near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) last month, injuring three South Korean soldiers.
