Every wealthy executive eventually wonders where to escape when the phones stop ringing. For Charles Schwab, the discount brokerage pioneer, the answer was a quiet corner of western Montana, where a century-old horse ranch offered fishing, dirt roads, and a genuine chance to be an ordinary neighbour.
Rather than simply visit, he spent heavily to rebuild the property as a private retreat with a golf course, restored barns, guest houses, and homesites for sale. This article explains how Thoroughbred pastureland became the Stock Farm in the Bitterroot Valley, what it cost, who it was built for, and why it mattered.
How Charles Schwab swapped boardroom suits for waders and jeans at his Bitterroot Valley ranch hideaway
According to Forbes, there was nothing Charles Schwab enjoyed more than slipping away to his reclusive ranch in the Bitterroot Valley, about 35 miles south of Missoula.
Forbes described how the discount brokerage founder became Chuck there, a fly fisherman in waders and a regular supper customer at the 20-table Cantina La Cocina in downtown Victor. He drove the valley's dirt roads in a brown-and-white 1980 Chevrolet Suburban and traded his business suits for jeans.
Schwab told Forbes, in a telephone interview from his San Francisco headquarters, that he favours Gap denim because of his board role.
He was simply a man who valued the ranch first as a private escape from corporate life, where he could go by the first name Chuck.
Why a crowded public golf course in Hamilton pushed a ten-handicap golfer to build his own private club
The Bitterroot Valley had only one drawback for Schwab that the public golf course in nearby Hamilton was overcrowded and pocked with divots. Though it suited casual players, known in golf as duffers, but not a golfer with a ten handicap, which signals a skilled amateur game. Schwab's answer was not to lower his expectations.
Instead, Forbes wrote, a man on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans responded by pouring money into a private alternative.
That choice explains why the ranch grew from a quiet retreat into a development with an eighteen-hole course designed by links legend Tom Fazio, scheduled to open in the fall of 1998. Forbes presented the course as the project's emotional centre, the thing closest to Schwab's heart.
An estimated thirty-million-dollar restoration of copper king Marcus Daly's century-old Thoroughbred ranch
Forbes estimated that Schwab poured about 30 million dollars into the 100-year-old, 2,600-acre Stock Farm, the Thoroughbred horse ranch of copper king Marcus Daly.
Schwab was intent on restoring the property rather than replacing its character. He planned red barns with galvanised-steel roofs, just as Daly did a century earlier. The club buildings and guest houses would be clapboard structures with pitched single roofs, while log cabins would sit on stone bases.
In practical terms, the spending bought a historic look, not a modern resort skyline. For readers weighing the price, the figure is Forbes's estimate rather than a number Schwab confirmed, and the scale of the land, 2,600 acres, shows how much ground the investment covered.
What buyers could purchase inside the Stock Farm in 1998
Beyond the barns and fairways. The new private golf club offered 350 memberships, which went on the market in the summer of 1998 and were fetching 40,000 dollars apiece. In 1998, 75 had been sold. The development also listed 96 lots tucked into the timber highlands, ranging from one acre to 35 acres and priced between 250,000 dollars and 1 million dollars. Only 12 of those lots had been purchased. Put simply, roughly one in five memberships and about one in eight lots had found buyers, based on the figures Forbes gave.
Those numbers show the project was still early in its sales cycle, with most of the inventory waiting for owners.
Schwab said it was not about making money, yet Forbes asked whether the buyers would come to Montana
Forbes closed its report with Schwab's own explanation. Schwab told Forbes that his life is about investing, which made this project a unique thing for him to do, and that, in his words, "It's not about making money." That statement changes how readers should interpret the figures above. A restoration estimated at 30 million dollars, a golf club with 350 memberships, and 96 homesites might look like a conventional real estate venture, yet Schwab presented the Stock Farm as a unique personal undertaking rather than a profit plan.
Forbes headlined its piece with a question about whether buyers would show up if he built the place, which captured the uncertainty of the early sales. As of October 1998, the answer was still unfolding, with buyers arriving gradually and the restoration underway.
