Pipis Kiosk
Seafood$$
This venue is included in Good Food’s 100 Essential Restaurants list.
A gorgeous, mellow fine diner where you can linger with a wine and give into the sea-sparkle hypnosis of Port Phillip Bay? Must be Pipis. The intimate room is an exhalation of champagne-coloured scrims, wicker-backed chairs and beechwood tones.
Assured service will furnish you with daisy-shaped crackers of smoked eel and tingling blood plum, or hefty stems of puntarelle, the bitter Italian greens, served with stracciatella, olives and pickled grape. Shark Bay scallop crudo comes with an earthy sea urchin sauce and dainty canoes of roasted onion.
Larger plates may include a generous Murray cod fillet, its char-black corners vivid against a bright, leek-scented foam, and dessert might be a seasonal parsnip Swiss roll with spiced ice-cream and zippy gooseberries, surrounded by fried parsnip as brittle as kindling. Pipis might be a kiosk by name, but it’s a portal to beachy bliss by nature.
Good to know: You can stop by the takeaway window for excellent fish and chips.
