Josh Jacobs' Status Revealed Ahead of Packers-Lions Showdown

Josh Jacobs is on track to make his 2026 season debut after missing the Green Bay Packers' first six games while on the NFL's Commissioner Exempt List.

The league placed him on the list in August as it reviewed his legal situation following a May arrest. Jacobs pleaded no contest in September to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property. The league's investigation under its personal conduct policy remains ongoing, so his return to the field doesn't mean the NFL's review is complete.

Jacobs remained connected to the team through meetings and workouts, but wasn't allowed to practice or play during his time on the list. His removal from the list made him eligible to return, although Green Bay initially wanted to see how he handled a full week of practice first before deciding whether he'd play in their Week 7 divisional clash against the Detroit Lions.

On Wednesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Jacobs would practice and is expected to play Sunday against the Lions.

Getting Jacobs back could give the Packers' offense a much-needed lift. Green Bay has averaged just 59.8 rushing yards per game, the lowest mark in the NFL by a wide margin, while averaging a horrendous 2.9 yards per carry through six games. They have yet to surpass 100 rushing yards in a single game this season.

Their struggles on the ground haven't entirely been on the running backs, as inconsistent blocking has also played a role, but Jacobs gives them a proven option who can handle a heavy workload. Jacobs rushed for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns in 15 games last season with the Packers, averaging 4.0 yards per carry.

Sunday's clash with the Lions is a big test for both sides. It's the first meeting between the NFC North rivals this season, and both teams will likely be fighting for playoff positioning down the stretch of the season. Green Bay enters at 4-2 and riding a 3-game winning streak, while Detroit sits at 3-2 following a bye week.

A division win would strengthen either team's position in a competitive race, and Jacobs' potential return could give Green Bay an advantage.
