A shopper may discover a product through an AI-generated recommendation, then abandon the purchase when the brand’s website tells a different story. Adobe’s latest research suggests that this trust gap is becoming a direct sales risk for businesses of all sizes.
According to Adobe, 27% of consumers now trust AI-generated search summaries more than traditional search results. Another 36% trust both approaches equally. The findings, published in Adobe’s analysis of AI search and shopper abandonment, indicate that AI is becoming a significant part of product discovery rather than simply replacing conventional search.
For small businesses, that shift creates both an opportunity and a responsibility. A company can gain visibility when an AI tool recommends its product, service or location. But if the recommendation includes an outdated price, incorrect specification or misleading availability detail, the business may still lose the customer—even when the company did not generate the AI response.
“59% of consumers say they lose trust in a brand when AI displays incorrect information about it, even if the brand wasn’t responsible for generating the response,” Adobe reported.
The distinction between traditional and AI search helps explain the change. Conventional search engines generally return a list of links ranked using factors such as keywords, backlinks and site authority. Customers then compare those sources themselves.
AI search tools instead synthesize information into a single response. They may compare products, summarize features and recommend an option based on the user’s apparent intent. That convenience can make the answer feel more authoritative, particularly when it saves shoppers from visiting several websites.
Adobe found that 10% of consumers trust AI recommendations “significantly more” than traditional search. At the same time, most shoppers still show some caution: 64% verify AI-generated information against a brand’s website at least most of the time, including 30% who always check.
That verification step gives small businesses a practical opening. A website does not need to compete with the scale of a national retailer to become a reliable reference point. It does need to provide clear, current and consistent information.
For a retailer, that could mean matching prices, inventory status, product dimensions and return policies across its website, online marketplaces and social media profiles. A home-services company might review its service areas, operating hours, certifications and starting prices. Restaurants, salons and professional firms should check that contact details, booking instructions and availability match across business directories and their own sites.
Adobe recommends treating public-facing data as ongoing infrastructure rather than a one-time marketing task. Businesses should keep product descriptions, pricing and specifications identical wherever customers might encounter them. They should also use structured data, often called schema markup, to label details such as price, availability, reviews and product type in a format that search systems can interpret more accurately.
Small businesses should also designate a primary source of truth. That may be an inventory system, product database, website content management system or central knowledge hub. Staff can then update secondary channels from that source instead of changing each listing manually and risking inconsistencies.
The commercial stakes are clear in Adobe’s findings: “49% of consumers say they’ve abandoned a purchase after noticing a discrepancy between what an AI tool told them and what they found on a brand’s website.” For a small company with limited marketing spend, preventing that abandonment may deliver more value than adding another advertising campaign.
The work will not eliminate every problem. AI systems can draw from third-party pages, outdated directories or user-generated content that a business cannot fully control. Even accurate company information may be summarized incorrectly. Owners also need to weigh the time and cost of auditing listings, adding schema markup and maintaining multiple sales channels.
Responsibility remains unclear to many consumers. Adobe found that 35% view inaccurate information as a shared responsibility across the AI ecosystem, while 38% blame the AI platform. Only 13% blame the brand directly. Yet customers still experience the inconsistency during the buying process, and that experience can damage confidence in the business.
Generational differences may affect how companies respond. Adobe said Gen Z consumers are slightly less likely to verify AI information, with 61% checking it always or most of the time. The group is also 22% more likely than older generations to blame the AI platform when recommendations go wrong. Younger shoppers may therefore rely more heavily on AI while placing less emphasis on checking the original source.
Business owners cannot control every AI answer, but they can improve the information those systems are likely to find. Regular content audits, consistent listings and clearly structured product data offer relatively practical steps. They also strengthen the customer experience beyond AI search by reducing confusion for anyone comparing a business across websites, maps, marketplaces and social platforms.
