Gangtok, Oct 19: Former Rajya Sabha MP and BJP national general secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam was sworn in as the 19th Governor of Sikkim at Lok Bhavan on Monday, amid opposition protests over his appointment.
Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque, administered the oath of office and secrecy at the ceremony attended by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, members of the state Council of Ministers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, High Court judges, and senior civil and military officials.
Earlier, Chief Secretary R. Telang read out the President’s warrant of appointment issued by President Droupadi Murmu on October 12. Gautam succeeds Om Prakash Mathur as the state’s Governor.
Following the oath-taking, Gautam received a ceremonial Guard of Honour from the Sikkim Armed Police.
Gautam’s appointment has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, including Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who have urged Rashtrapati Bhavan to reconsider the decision.

Opposition leaders have cited allegations linked to ongoing investigations in Uttarakhand.
Protests were also held in Dehradun, where opposition groups staged rallies and submitted representations seeking a stay on the swearing-in until judicial proceedings reach an outcome.
Despite the political opposition, the oath-taking ceremony proceeded as scheduled at Lok Bhavan, formally marking Gautam’s assumption of office as Governor of Sikkim.
