John Cena’s wrestling career has taken him from packed arenas to film sets, but a different part of his public life has involved meeting children living with critical illnesses. Since 2002, the American wrestler and actor has made time for requests handled by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organisation that arranges experiences for children facing serious medical conditions.
Guinness World Records reported that by September 2022, his contribution had reached a record 650 wishes, earning him recognition from Guinness World Records. The figure placed Cena ahead of every other celebrity involved with the charity, following two decades in which he continued to accept requests alongside the demands of his career in professional wrestling and entertainment. The WWE ambassador has secured his place in pop culture and the record books as a Guinness World Records ICON.
His induction will be featured in Guinness World Records 2027, as reported.
John Cena’s Make-A-Wish journey began in 2002
Cena’s association with Make-A-Wish started three years after he entered professional wrestling in 1999. At the time, his career was still developing, and his later success in WWE had yet to take shape. His first wish for the charity marked the beginning of a relationship that would eventually extend across hundreds of meetings with children and their families.
Make-A-Wish works with children aged between two and 18 who have been diagnosed with critical illnesses. Their requests vary according to individual interests and circumstances. Some children want to meet a favourite public figure, while others ask to attend a particular event or receive a gift for themselves or someone else. For Cena, the requests became a recurring part of his life outside wrestling. The number of wishes he granted grew over the years, eventually putting him well ahead of other celebrities who had participated in the programme.
Guinness World Records recognised John Cena for his charitable milestone
In September 2022, Guinness World Records reported that Cena had granted 650 wishes through Make-A-Wish, establishing a record for the most wishes granted through the foundation. The milestone followed an earlier occasion when he was recognised for reaching 500.According to Guinness World Records, no other celebrity had granted more than 400 wishes during the organisation’s 42-year history at the time of its report.
Cena was also described as the foundation’s most requested celebrity, reflecting the demand among children hoping to meet him.The record was not based on a single event or a short period of charitable activity. It represented a commitment that had developed over roughly 20 years, running alongside his work as a professional wrestler and, increasingly, as an actor.
Why John Cena was willing to drop everything to grant a child’s wish
Cena has spoken about his willingness to respond when Make-A-Wish contacts him.
He said: "If you ever need me for this ever, I don’t care what I’m doing, I will drop what I’m doing and be involved because I think that’s the coolest thing.""I just drop everything," Cena said when he was honoured for granting 500 wishes."If I can offer a fantastic experience, I’ll be first in line to do my part."Those remarks offered an explanation for how his total had continued to rise despite a demanding professional schedule.
Wrestling appearances, filming and other commitments can leave limited room for additional engagements. Cena’s stated willingness to rearrange his plans gave the charity a measure of consistency in arranging meetings with him.
John Cena gives children a chance to meet their wrestling hero
For children who choose Cena, the experience can involve more than a brief introduction. Meetings may include photographs, conversation and time spent with the wrestler. Some children have also had the chance to venture inside a wrestling ring, bringing them closer to the sport they follow.Cena often appears with one of his championship belts, a reminder of the career that made him recognisable to young fans. He has held the WWE Championship 13 separate times, won the World Heavyweight Championship three times and captured the United States Championship five times, according to the Guinness World Records report.

Cena entered WWE in 1999 and became one of its most prominent performers. A 16-time world champion, he built a public identity around his wrestling persona before moving into acting and other entertainment work.
His involvement in WWE’s Be a Star anti-bullying campaign also extended his public-facing work beyond competition in the ring.Make-A-Wish became another part of that activity. Founded to fulfil wishes for children with critical illnesses, the charity offers experiences shaped by the interests of the children it serves. Meeting a celebrity is one option, alongside attending events and other personal requests.Cena is not the only well-known figure to have taken part. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Samuel L. Jackson have also granted wishes through the foundation. By the time his total reached 650 in 2022, however, Cena had established a record that separated his contribution from those of other celebrity participants.
