Kansas Republican Roger Marshall is fighting for a second term in the U.S. Senate, with recent polling showing a close race against Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton.
Away from politics, Marshall has been married to his wife, Laina Marshall, for more than four decades. The couple raised four children together and now have five grandchildren, according to Marshall's official Senate biography.
Laina has also been part of Marshall's life throughout his medical and political careers, with the senator frequently referring publicly to their marriage, family, and shared Christian faith.

Who Is Roger Marshall?
Marshall is a physician who has represented Kansas in the Senate since January 2021. Before entering the Senate, he represented Kansas' 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives from 2017 until 2021.
A fifth-generation Kansas farm kid, Marshall became the first member of his family to attend college. He earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Kansas State University before receiving his medical degree from the University of Kansas. He subsequently worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist in Great Bend, Kansas, for 25 years and delivered more than 5,000 babies, according to his Senate webpage. He also served for seven years in the U.S. Army Reserve, rising to the rank of captain.

Marshall's 2026 reelection campaign emphasizes his conservative record, particularly on agriculture, healthcare, border security, energy, and the cost of living. His campaign lists support for the Laken Riley Act and the Build the Wall Act—both immigration and border-security measures—among his border-security credentials, while highlighting legislation aimed at rural health care and reducing costs for farmers.
He’s also highlighted tax policy as a central economic issue. Earlier this year, Marshall promoted measures reducing taxes on tips and overtime pay and expanding tax credits for families.
His official Senate biography describes him as a “congressional leader on health care and agriculture policies” as well as a prominent opponent of abortion and supporter of Second Amendment rights.
Where Does Marshall Stand Against Adam Hamilton?
Marshall is facing a much tighter race than Republicans have traditionally encountered in Kansas.
As of October 19, the RealClearPolling average of surveys conducted between September 8 and October 14 puts Marshall at 46 percent and Hamilton at 45.7 percent, giving the Republican a lead of just 0.3 percentage points.
The individual surveys have produced mixed results. An InsiderAdvantage poll conducted October 13-14 put Marshall ahead 48 percent to 47 percent. A YouGov survey conducted between September 24 and October 4 had Hamilton ahead 48 percent to 45 percent, while a New York Times/Siena poll conducted from September 22 to October 1 put Marshall ahead by one point, 47 percent to 46 percent.
The results show just how competitive the November 3 election has become in a state that traditionally leans Republican.
Who Is Laina Marshall?
Laina has been alongside Marshall for most of his career. In a July 2026 Facebook post, marking their anniversary, Marshall said the couple's relationship moved quickly in 1982, writing that "a fall in 1982 turned into an engagement 12 weeks later, and a wedding just a week before medical school began."
He added: "Since then, we’ve raised four wonderful children, welcomed five grandkids, and built a lifetime of memories together."
Marshall has continuously publicly celebrated their relationship for years. In a July 30, 2020, Facebook post marking their 37th anniversary, he described Laina as the "love of my life."

How Has Laina Supported Roger Marshall?
Laina's support for her husband stretches back well before his election to Congress.
Marshall's official biography says faith and community have played a central role in the couple's lives. Roger and Laina taught Sunday school together for more than 25 years, while Marshall served as an elder, deacon, and board chairman at his church.
The couple also raised their four children in Kansas while Marshall spent more than two decades working as an OB-GYN in Great Bend. His campaign biography says he raised his family there while building his medical practice, before eventually entering national politics.
Laina has remained a visible presence during that political career, accompanying her husband at public and political events while Marshall has repeatedly presented his family, faith and Kansas roots as central parts of his public identity.
Now, more than four decades after they married, the couple is approaching another significant moment together as Marshall seeks six more years representing Kansas in Washington.
Newsweek has emailed Marshall's Senate office for comment and is awaiting a response.
