Taylor Swift’s 2025 purchase of the master recordings of her first six albums marked a significant moment in her long-running fight for control over her music. However, a separate transaction announced in June 2026 has highlighted another side of the music business, the ownership of songwriting and publishing rights.
HarbourView Equity Partners acquired the publisher’s share of selected compositions written by Wolf Cousins, the songwriting collective founded by Swedish hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback. The deal included two Swift hits, Style and …Ready for It?. It did not affect Swift’s existing ownership of the recordings or transfer her own songwriting share. Instead, it demonstrated how different rights associated with the same song can belong to different parties.
How the 2026 deal involved two Taylor Swift hits
On June 24, 2026, HarbourView announced a strategic partnership with Wolf Cousins and confirmed that it had acquired the publisher’s share of selected compositions written by the collective. Founded by Max Martin and Shellback, Wolf Cousins has been involved in creating commercially successful songs across pop music. The compositions covered by the deal included Swift’s Style, from her 2014 album 1989, and …Ready for It?, from her 2017 album Reputation.
Both songs were co-written by Swift, Martin and Shellback. The transaction also included songs recorded by other artists, including Ariana Grande’s Problem, Into You and No Tears Left to Cry; The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face; Imagine Dragons’ Believer; Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do; Tove Lo’s Habits (Stay High); and DNCE’s Cake by the Ocean. Warner Chappell continues to administer the catalogue, according to HarbourView’s announcement. The financial terms were not publicly disclosed by HarbourView. Variety, which first reported the transaction, cited sources who placed its value in the low nine figures. The investment firm declined to confirm that figure, so it should be treated as a reported valuation rather than an officially established sale price.
What is the difference between master recordings and publishing rights?
The distinction between the two types of rights is central to understanding the transaction.A master recording refers to a specific recorded version of a song. The underlying musical composition, meanwhile, consists of the music and lyrics. A single track can therefore involve separate copyright interests held by recording owners, songwriters and music publishers.Master rights can generate revenue when a particular recording is streamed, sold or licensed. Publishing rights can generate royalties when the underlying composition is performed publicly, reproduced or licensed for certain uses, including film and television productions. In Swift’s case, the 2026 transaction concerned the publisher’s share of selected compositions associated with Martin and Shellback. It did not mean that HarbourView acquired Swift’s original recordings or her own share of the songwriting copyright. The transaction illustrates how an investor can acquire one part of a song’s rights without owning the entire work.
Why music publishing attracts investors
Established songwriting catalogues can offer investors income from several sources.
These include royalties associated with streaming, public performances and the licensing of compositions for films, television programmes and advertisements. The appeal also lies in the potential longevity of successful songs. A composition can continue generating revenue years after its release, particularly when it remains popular or finds new audiences through films, television, social media and other uses.Fortune quoted Barry Massarsky, who leads music and entertainment valuation services at advisory firm Citrin Cooperman, explaining that established catalogues can be attractive because their earnings become easier to evaluate as their revenue patterns stabilise. Massarsky was not involved in the HarbourView transaction.Ownership of publishing rights can also affect licensing negotiations. When a company acquires a songwriter’s share, it may reduce the number of separate parties that need to be consulted for certain uses.
However, other rights holders may still need to grant permission, depending on the ownership structure and the intended use.
How Taylor Swift regained her first six albums
Swift’s 2025 acquisition followed years of disputes over the ownership of her early recordings. She signed with Big Machine Label Group as a teenager, and the label retained the master recordings of her first six albums. In 2019, music manager Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine, bringing the masters under his control.
The recordings were subsequently sold to investment firm Shamrock Capital in 2020.Swift responded by re-recording four of the albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The new recordings gave her versions of the songs that she owned, while the original masters remained separately owned. On May 30, 2025, Swift announced that she had purchased the original master recordings from Shamrock Capital.
Her statement also referred to associated music videos, concert films, album artwork, photography and unreleased songs. She thanked Shamrock for the transaction and described the acquisition as a long-held personal goal. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Why the 2026 deal does not reverse Swift’s 2025 achievement
Swift’s acquisition gave her ownership of the original master recordings of her first six albums, but it did not automatically give her every share of the underlying compositions written with collaborators. The HarbourView transaction involved the publishing interests associated with Martin and Shellback’s contributions to selected songs. Swift’s own songwriting interests were not reported as part of the sale, and the transaction did not undo her acquisition of the masters. The distinction is particularly relevant to songs that have been re-recorded. Publishing rights relate to the underlying composition, meaning they can apply to different recordings of the same song, subject to the relevant rights and agreements. Consequently, a publisher’s interest in a composition can remain commercially valuable even when an artist owns a particular recording of it.
