“Your logic doesn’t make any sense”: Jon Jones challenges Colby Covington after Gable Steveson loss as former college roommates reignite their bitter rivalry
Henry Cejudo has revealed how Jon Jones personally reached out to him after watching his detailed fight breakdowns. The former two-division UFC champion said Jones was so impressed by his analysis that he told Cejudo, “I couldn’t explain myself better than what you did.
”Cejudo said Jones later visited him on six separate occasions to learn and work with him. However, Cejudo stressed that he never viewed himself as Jones’ coach. Instead, he compared the heavyweight great to a Lamborghini that only needed to be polished before another major challenge.
Henry Cejudo explains how he helped Jon Jones sharpen his skills
Henry Cejudo’s relationship with Jon Jones grew from his detailed analysis of MMA fights. The Olympic gold medallist became known for breaking down fighters and explaining the technical aspects of their games on his YouTube channel.Jones, who was preparing for his move to heavyweight at the time, apparently paid close attention to Cejudo’s work. The former UFC light heavyweight champion eventually contacted Cejudo himself after watching one of his breakdowns.
According to Cejudo, Jones praised his ability to explain the fighter’s game and gave him a major compliment, “I couldn’t explain myself better than what you did.”That conversation eventually led to Jones visiting Cejudo multiple times.
Cejudo has revealed that Jones came to work with him on six different occasions. Their sessions were particularly relevant ahead of Jones’ heavyweight debut against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023.Jones travelled to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked with Cejudo and coach Eric Albarracin at Fight Ready. The sessions focused on sharpening Jones’ skills and helping him prepare for the challenges of competing at heavyweight. However, Cejudo has always been careful about describing his role in Jones’ development. He did not believe that Jones needed someone to teach him how to fight. Jones had already established himself as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history.Instead, Cejudo viewed his contribution as helping an already elite fighter make small improvements. That is where his famous Lamborghini comparison comes in.For Cejudo, Jones was already a high-end machine. He simply wanted to help polish it and make sure everything was working at the highest possible level. The collaboration also highlighted the respect between two of the most accomplished fighters in combat sports.Cejudo won Olympic gold in wrestling at the 2008 Beijing Games before becoming a UFC champion in two weight classes. Jones, meanwhile, built a legendary career at light heavyweight before moving up to heavyweight and winning the vacant UFC heavyweight title.
Cejudo’s own wrestling background made his experience particularly valuable to Jones.
The former Olympic champion understood the importance of positioning, pressure, timing and conditioning at the highest level.Cejudo has since continued his own combat sports career. He recently returned to wrestling competition and faced Merab Dvalishvili at RAF 12.While Cejudo now has his own combat sports commitments, his story about Jones shows the level of respect the heavyweight champion had for his technical knowledge.
