A unique heritage tonga ride for couples in traditional attire was held as part of Dasara festival in Mysuru on Saturday.
Commissioner of Department of Archeology, Museums and Heritage P. Shivaraju, who presided over the programme at Town Hall in Mysuru, said heritage tonga ride for couples in traditional attire had been organised to preserve and promote the State’s heritage.
“Even though we may wear modern clothes, traditional events such as these play an important role in showcasing our art, culture and heritage to the world,” he said.
Film actress and theatre artist Akshatha Pandavapura, who flagged off the tonga ride, said Mysuru was witnessing a vibrant atmosphere of traditional celebrations and Dasara festivities.
She said the event highlighted the special moments when couples discuss and decide what to wear before attending weddings and other special occasions. The popularity of Mysuru silk sarees and traditional attire had added further charm to such celebrations, she said.
“Dasara, tonga rides and such traditional platforms offer a unique sense of happiness to the people of Mysuru. People across generations are coming together to enjoy these events, further strengthening the city’s distinctive cultural identity and traditions,” she said.
As part of the programme, couples dressed in traditional attire rode in tongas through various streets of the city. During the ride, they were also given information about Mysuru’s heritage buildings.
Deputy director of the Department C.N. Manjula, retired professor of Ancient History and Archaeology N.S. Rangaraju and others were present.
