Agricultural export earnings rose to $4.609 billion (about Shs17trillion) in 2025, more than doubling from a decade-long average of $2.5 billion, but the country continues to spend $800m on importing vegetable oil because local production falls short of demand.
Mr Frank Tumwebaze, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), told Parliament on Wednesday that the growth in exports reflects the sector’s increasing contribution to the economy, although gaps in domestic production persist in some value chains.
