The Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA), Rizig Dominic Samuel, has pledged to streamline customs procedures and address delays affecting clearing agents and traders across the country.
Rizig made the assurance during a meeting with a delegation led by Deng Daniel, President of the South Sudan Freight Forwarders Association.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, discussed challenges affecting customs operations at the Nimule border, Juba International Airport and other points of entry.
The delegation called for measures to reduce clearance delays, improve efficiency and facilitate legitimate trade.
Rizig acknowledged that border delays and complex clearance procedures increase business costs. He reaffirmed the SSRA’s commitment to working with stakeholders to simplify processes, reduce delays and ensure the timely release of goods and vehicles once customs requirements are met.
The delegation also briefed the commissioner general on SSRA-led training aimed at improving clearing agents’ understanding of customs laws and procedures.
The training targets officially registered and licensed agencies operating from physical offices at authorised ports of entry, with the aim of curbing the activities of unlicensed intermediaries.
On compliance, Rizig stressed the importance of accurate customs declarations and complete documentation, warning against the under-declaration or over-declaration of goods.
He directed the Customs Compliance and Enforcement Division to strengthen efforts against smuggling, illicit trade, improper inspections and irregular transit movements to protect government revenue and secure the country’s borders.
