SHILLONG, Oct 25: More than 4,000 runners are expected to participate in the sixth edition of the Assam Rifles Half Marathon in Shillong on November 22, with organisers announcing a total prize pool of ₹25 lakh for the event.
The marathon, which has grown in popularity since its launch in 2021, will feature three race categories — 5 km, 10 km and 21 km — for participants aged 12 to 60 years and above. Runners from across the country are expected to compete on the scenic routes of Upper Shillong.
The announcement was made during a curtain-raiser at the Assam Rifles Liaison Office in Delhi Cantonment, where organisers unveiled the official jersey and finisher medal for the 2026 edition.
The event is expected to draw its highest-ever participation, reflecting the growing interest in long-distance running and fitness in the Northeast and other parts of the country.
Col Apurva Bhatnagar, VSM, of Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles, said the enhanced prize money reflected the force’s vision of developing the marathon into a premier sporting event in the region.
Since its inception, the Assam Rifles Half Marathon has evolved from a fitness initiative into an annual event promoting health, unity and community participation, organisers said.
The marathon also seeks to strengthen camaraderie among the armed forces while encouraging greater public participation in fitness activities. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a fitter and healthier India.
The event is expected to be attended by dignitaries from the government, armed forces and other walks of life.
With its combination of competitive racing, substantial prize money and a scenic course, the sixth edition is expected to further raise Shillong’s profile as a destination for major sporting events in the Northeast.
