Teulada-Moraira has completed 13 projects designed to make the Costa Blanca North destination more sustainable, accessible and easier to explore, following an investment of more than €2 million in improvements funded largely by the European Union.
The projects include solar-powered street lighting, upgrades to cycling infrastructure linking Teulada and Moraira, improved pedestrian access and new digital tools to help manage tourism across the municipality.
The council has confirmed that all 13 measures under its Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan have been completed within the established deadlines. The programme received €2,001,722 in funding through the EU’s NextGenerationEU recovery funds, forming part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The investment is intended to support a more environmentally responsible tourism model while improving public spaces and services for both residents and visitors.
Solar lighting and cycling improvements lead the investment
One of the largest individual projects involved installing solar streetlights, with €556,785.69 allocated from European funding and a further €40,348.32 contributed by Teulada-Moraira council.
The installation is intended to reduce reliance on conventional energy and lower municipal electricity consumption by making greater use of renewable power.
Cycling and pedestrian infrastructure also featured prominently in the programme. Improvements to the cycling route between Teulada and Moraira aim to encourage safer, more environmentally friendly journeys between the municipality’s two main urban centres.
Accessibility works in Teulada’s historic centre have also been completed, with the aim of making public areas easier to navigate on foot and more inclusive for people with different mobility needs.
Digital technology to help manage visitors
The programme extends beyond physical improvements, with several of its 13 projects focused on digitalisation and tourism management.
These include parking sensors, digital signage designed to help redistribute visitor flows, and a destination management dashboard to support the monitoring and planning of tourism.
The council has also introduced tools to improve access to information at cultural venues and beaches, including accessible codes. A separate social media dashboard and digital marketing initiatives are intended to strengthen the promotion of local cultural tourism.
Other measures include reports on the municipality’s accommodation offer, a sustainable urban route designed to help Teulada adapt to climate change, and the creation of a Smart Office to support tourism management.
The plan also included funding for the management of the overall programme itself.
Four priorities for Teulada-Moraira’s future
The 13 projects were organised around four main priorities: environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and mobility, digital transformation, and improving the destination’s competitiveness.
Together, they form part of a wider effort to modernise tourism infrastructure while making more efficient use of resources and protecting the area’s surroundings.
The European funding was awarded to support the municipality’s plan to develop a more sustainable, diversified and digitally managed destination. The original allocation of €2,001,722 was recorded in Spain’s Official State Gazette as part of the national distribution of funding for sustainable tourism destination plans.
With all 13 actions now completed, Teulada-Moraira has concluded this phase of its investment programme. The improvements cover everything from street lighting and cycling connections to digital visitor information, reflecting an approach that combines environmental measures with better tourism services.
The challenge now will be to make the most of the new infrastructure and digital tools to support a tourism model that benefits visitors and the people who live in the municipality throughout the year.
