TWO PEOPLE have been disqualified from contesting for positions in the upcoming Ashanti Regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) executive elections.
Making the announcement, the Chairman of the Vetting Committee, Yaw Boateng Gyan, who is a former National Organiser of the NDC, stated that the two failed to meet the party’s criteria.
He said, in total, 65 party members were thoroughly vetted by the Vetting Committee for various positions and 63 people qualified, adding that two people would contest for their positions unopposed.
The breakdown of people contesting for the various positions in the region include Chairman – 2, Vice Chairman – 8, Secretary – 3, Deputy Secretary – 3, Regional Organiser – 6, Deputy Organiser – 14 and Treasurer – 1.
The rest are Deputy Treasurer – 1, Communication Officer – 2, Deputy Communication Officer – 3, Women Organiser -3, Deputy Women Organiser – 3, Youth Organiser – 4, Deputy Youth Organiser – 6 and Zongo Caucus Coordinator – 4.
Mr. Boateng Gyan described the vetting process as very peaceful and fair, stressing that the two disqualified party members have the right to appeal the committee’s verdict.
According to him, the euphoria that characterised the vetting process in Kumasi was a strong indication of the growth of the NDC in the Ashanti Region, saying, “You all saw the huge number of party people who stormed the vetting premises, happily displaying the NDC’s colours. That tells you that the NDC has made significant inroads in the Ashanti Region.”
Mr. Boateng Gyan admonished the various aspirants to embark on a clean campaign, devoid of insults and insinuations, reminding them that the upcoming election is a family affair so they should avoid attacks.
He said the peace and unity that is flourishing in the NDC in the Ashanti Region should be jealously maintained and protected after the regional elections, so that the party can increase its votes in the region.
