TikTok has denied implementing restrictions on access to its platform in parts of Northern Nigeria, saying it is engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve the disruption reported by users.
The company’s position comes amid reports of prolonged difficulties accessing the short video sharing platform in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states, with some users reportedly turning to virtual private networks (VPNs) to restore access.
TikTok made this known in a statement shared with Nairametrics on Monday. The company, however, did not identify the source of the disruption or the stakeholders involved in the engagement.
TikTok says it didn’t do it
While the disruption is still ongoing, TikTok said it is currently engaging with the relevant stakeholders to address the matter.
- “We are aware of reports regarding restricted access to our platform in certain parts of Nigeria. We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok.
- “We are actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to resolve the situation and remain committed to ensuring access for our community,” a TikTok spokesperson said in the statement.
Access problems reported since September
Reports of difficulties accessing TikTok in parts of Northern Nigeria emerged around September 14, 2026, with users complaining that videos would not load, feeds would not refresh, and uploads would stall when using regular mobile data connections.
A report by Tech Digest on September 17 documented complaints from users in Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto, some of whom said connecting through a VPN restored access to the platform.
The disruption subsequently drew the attention of civil society organisations, which called for an investigation into its cause and urged the government, telecommunications regulators and service providers to clarify whether any deliberate restriction had been imposed.
- On October 2, a coalition of 12 civil society organisations raised concerns about what it described as a prolonged digital blackout affecting TikTok access in parts of the region.
- The coalition called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Office of the National Security Adviser and affected state governments to investigate the disruption and publish their findings.
The organisations also urged telecommunications operators and TikTok to cooperate in establishing the cause of the problem.
As of the time of the coalition’s statement, available information had not established whether the disruption resulted from a technical fault, a network routing problem, a platform-side issue, a traffic management measure or an intentional restriction.
What you should know
The Northern Nigerian development comes as TikTok continues to enforce strict compliance with its community guidelines through removal of content and accounts that breach the platform’s rules.
Nairametrics earlier reported that TikTok took down more than 4 million videos and shut down over 86,000 live sessions in Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to its Q4 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report.
Nigeria’s removal numbers reflect both the scale of content being uploaded on the platform and the increasing sophistication of the automated systems TikTok is deploying to catch violations before users even encounter them.
