Let us address the elephant in the room, the one wearing skinny jeans, driving a suspiciously expensive car and dating someone who was still in primary school when they were already paying rent.
Is age really just a number, or is that simply what people say when the number is making everyone uncomfortable?
Society has colourful names for relationships with large age gaps.
An older woman dating a younger man is quickly labelled a “cougar”. An older man dating a younger woman becomes a “sugar daddy”, especially if a Hilux, a new iPhone or a weekend at Swakopmund is involved.
Interestingly, the younger partners also receive labels, but rarely the romantic kind. Mbuae, people can be harsh!
But what is the ‘correct’ age gap? Two years? Five? Ten? Is there perhaps a Ministry of Relationships where couples can apply for age-gap clearance? Because everyone seems to have an opinion, yet nobody has the official regulations.
Some people believe couples should be close in age because they are more likely to share similar experiences, energy levels and plans for the future. They grew up listening to the same music, understand the same jokes and will not need to explain why certain things were “a vibe”.
When one says, “do you remember that song?”, the other does not respond with “no, I was three”.
Others argue that age has very little to do with compatibility. You can meet someone your age who is emotionally unavailable, irresponsible and still asking their mother for taxi money.
Meanwhile, someone considerably older may offer maturity, stability and clear intentions. Of course, the opposite is also possible. Wisdom does not automatically come with age. Some people have been on earth for 55 years but have gathered only 23 years of sense.
The uncomfortable question remains: How do you date someone who is the same age as your mother or father?
Imagine arriving at Christmas lunch and your partner starts discussing school memories with your parents. Worse, they discover they attended the same school. Now your romantic partner and your father are laughing about Standard 6 while you sit quietly eating potato salad. Yoh!
Back in the day, large age gaps were not unusual. Marriages were often influenced by family expectations, financial security, culture and survival. Women had fewer economic opportunities, and older men were generally considered better prepared to provide for a household.
Love may have grown later; sometimes it did not grow at all. People simply remained married because divorce was treated like a national scandal and family meetings could last longer than parliament.
Today, relationships are expected to offer much more than financial provision. We want companionship, emotional safety, attraction, shared values, friendship and someone who will not embarrass us on social media.
We want a person who understands our dreams, supports our growth and creates a safe space where we can be ourselves without constantly walking on eggshells.
Perhaps that is what matters most.
But finding someone who genuinely makes you happy and gives you peace is not always easy. If you meet an adult who respects you, communicates honestly, supports you and makes you feel emotionally secure, should society’s discomfort automatically disqualify that relationship?
People will talk – whether you date someone older, younger or exactly your age. In Namibia, even being single for too long becomes a community concern.
Still, happiness should not make us blind. A large age gap can create genuine challenges. The partners may be at completely different stages of life. One may want children while the other is preparing for retirement. One wants to dance until 02h00; the other is already yawning at 20h30 and asking why the music is so loud.
Power also matters. Is one partner controlling the money, decisions and social life? Can the younger partner disagree freely, or are they constantly reminded that “I have more life experience than you”?
A relationship between consenting adults should still be built on equality, respect and honest intentions. Love should never become an excuse for manipulation or control.
Perhaps there is no perfect age gap. One of five years can be unhealthy, while a 20-year gap can be loving and respectful. The real questions may be: Are we equal partners? Do we want the same future? Can we communicate honestly? Do I feel safe, valued and free? Am I loved, or am I simply being managed?
Love can outweigh many things, but it should not require us to ignore obvious warning signs. Age may be just a number, but sometimes that number arrives with different generations, expectations and medical aid packages.
In the end, choose the person who brings you happiness, peace and safety.
Just confirm before introducing them to the family that they did not once date your auntie.
Namibia is a very small country!
