Sri Lanka’s first MRI with Siemens Healthineers’ Deep Resolve AI technology sets a new national benchmark in diagnostic imaging, bringing a level of capability not previously available in the country and marking another step forward in advancing Sri Lanka’s healthcare standards.
Hemas Hospitals has brought a new class of MRI technology to Sri Lanka with the introduction of the Siemens Healthineers MAGNETOM Sola 1.5T at Hemas Capital Hospital, Thalawathugoda. Considered a global benchmark in advanced, patient-centric MRI imaging, the system gives Sri Lankan patients access to capabilities at the forefront of modern diagnostic imaging.
The system is the first MRI in Sri Lanka to feature Siemens Healthineers’ Deep Resolve AI-based image reconstruction technology, introducing a combination of artificial intelligence, advanced image quality, speed and patient comfort not previously available in the country.
This is more than an incremental upgrade in MRI capability. It represents a significant technological leap and establishes a new national benchmark for diagnostic imaging in Sri Lanka.
For Hemas Hospitals, it is also an important milestone in a much larger journey. Continued investment in advanced medical technology, clinical capability and healthcare infrastructure is intended not only to support the organisation’s next phase of growth, but also to help raise standards of care across Sri Lanka, expand access to world-class capabilities locally and demonstrate the meaningful role that responsible private healthcare investment can play in building a healthier nation.
A different class of MRI for Sri Lanka
The sophistication of the system behind an examination can have a significant impact on the quality of imaging, the time required to complete a scan, patient comfort and the overall safety of the experience.
The MAGNETOM Sola brings to Sri Lanka an MRI platform incorporating technology at the leading edge of global imaging innovation.
Its Deep Resolve technology uses artificial intelligence during image reconstruction to generate highly detailed images in significantly shorter examination times. According to Siemens Healthineers, a brain scan reconstructed using Deep Resolve can be completed in approximately half the time of a conventional scan while achieving twice the resolution.
For Sri Lankan patients, this means access to a level of imaging capability that has until now not been available locally.
The benefits are also immediately felt during the examination itself. Shorter scan times can mean less time inside the MRI, making the experience easier for patients who may experience anxiety or claustrophobia, as well as elderly patients, children and those who find it difficult to remain still for extended periods.
A complete knee examination can be performed with approximately three minutes of scan time, while certain examinations of the bile ducts can be completed in a single breath-hold of as little as 13 seconds.
The system also supports sophisticated applications including advanced cardiac MRI, further expanding the diagnostic capabilities available at Hemas Capital Hospital.
With its introduction, Hemas Hospitals is raising the benchmark for what an MRI experience in Sri Lanka can be.
Bringing the standards of leading global healthcare closer to home
The significance of this investment extends beyond diagnostic imaging.
For Hemas Hospitals, the new MRI reflects a broader ambition to ensure that Sri Lankan patients increasingly have access to healthcare technology and capabilities comparable with those found at leading healthcare institutions internationally.
Rather than requiring patients to look beyond Sri Lanka for the latest advancements in healthcare, Hemas is investing to bring those capabilities closer to home.
The MRI at Thalawathugoda is one of the early milestones in this next phase.
Hemas Hospitals is continuing to strengthen its clinical capabilities, technology and infrastructure as it prepares for future growth, with a focus not simply on increasing capacity, but on progressively elevating the standard of healthcare available in the country.
The organisation’s approach is centred on bringing together advanced medical technology, strong clinical expertise and a better patient experience.
In doing so, Hemas aims to contribute towards a healthier nation while helping Sri Lanka move closer to the highest standards of healthcare internationally.
The beginning of a bigger chapter
The introduction of this MRI comes at an important point in the evolution of Hemas Hospitals.
As the organisation enters its next phase of growth, further investments in healthcare infrastructure, technology and clinical capability are expected to build upon the foundation being created today.
The new MRI therefore represents one of the first tangible examples of the direction in which Hemas Hospitals is evolving.
It is a journey centred on strengthening the capabilities available within Sri Lanka, creating greater access to advanced care and building healthcare environments equipped to meet the expectations of patients well into the future.
Artificial intelligence will increasingly support that journey. Within the new MRI, AI is already working across areas such as image reconstruction and examination optimisation, enabling technology to support both clinicians and patients in practical ways.
For Hemas, however, technology is ultimately valuable because of what it enables: better diagnostics, better experiences and a higher standard of healthcare.
Dr. Lakith Peiris, Managing Director of Hemas Hospitals and Diagnostics Chain, said:
“This is a significant advancement not only for Hemas Hospitals, but for MRI imaging in Sri Lanka. We are bringing into the country a level of capability that has not previously been available here and giving our patients access to technology that sits at the forefront of modern diagnostic imaging.
“Our ambition is for Sri Lankan patients to have access to healthcare technology and clinical capabilities that stand alongside those available at leading institutions internationally. They should not have to look beyond Sri Lanka to access global standards of care and best healthcare practices.
“This MRI is an important milestone, but it is also the beginning of a much larger journey for Hemas Hospitals. As we enter our next phase of growth, we will continue investing in technology, infrastructure and clinical capability to help elevate healthcare standards and contribute towards a healthier Sri Lanka.”
Dr. Pradeep Edward, Director General Manager of Hemas Capital Hospital Pvt Ltd, said:
“What makes this technology different is not simply what the machine can do, but what that means for the patient. It enables us to combine highly advanced imaging with faster examinations and a more comfortable overall experience.
“For patients undergoing an MRI at Hemas Capital Hospital, this represents access to a standard of technology that Sri Lanka has not experienced before.
“That is the direction in which we want to continue taking healthcare at Hemas, combining excellent clinical expertise with some of the most advanced technology available to deliver an exceptional standard of care.”
The arrival of the Siemens Healthineers MAGNETOM Sola marks a new chapter for MRI in Sri Lanka and the beginning of a broader period of advancement for Hemas Hospitals.
As Hemas continues to invest in its future, the objective is clear: to bring the standards, capabilities and technologies shaping healthcare globally closer to Sri Lankan patients.
The Siemens Healthineers MAGNETOM Sola 1.5T MRI is now available at Hemas Capital Hospital, Thalawathugoda.
