(ANSA) - ROME, 13 OTT - The labour division of the Milan Court of Appeal on Tuesday declared null and void a ruling against Italian MEP Ilaria Salis for the wrongful dismissal of two of her former assistants, Valentina Dadda and François Gelmetti, and overturned the related order for her to pay over 300,000 euros in compensation.
The court upheld a petition from Salis's lawyers regarding the failure to ensure the right to a fair hearing in the first-instance ruling and sent the case back to that level of justice.
Salis was released from house arrest in Hungary, where she was on trial for alleged involvement in the assault on far-right demonstrators in February 2023, after being elected as a member of the European Parliament for Green-Left Alliance (AVS) in June 2024.
The allegedly inhumane detention conditions Salis was subjected to during a 16-month spell in a Hungarian jail provoked protests from Italy.
During her trial she was also led into court on a chain with her ankles and wrists cuffed, a procedure Hungary says is standard, but which caused widespread shock and indignation here. (ANSA).
