By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Belmopan park named for one of Belize’s great defenders of history is now in the care of the institution he helped shape.
The National Institute of Culture and History has signed an agreement with the Belmopan City Council to adopt Harriot Topsey Park.
Harriot W. Topsey served as Belize’s second Belizean Archaeological Commissioner. NICH describes him as a steadfast champion for the protection and preservation of Belize’s archaeological and historical heritage, whose advocacy permanently changed the face of archaeological work in the country.
He passed away in 1995, but his legacy lives on in the way Belize protects its ancient Maya sites and cultural treasures.
Through the partnership, NICH aims to maintain and improve the park as a green, welcoming space for residents of the capital.
It is a fitting tribute: a public space that honours a man who dedicated his life to preserving Belize’s heritage, now protected for future generations.
