A US team led by the embassy’s top diplomat has carried out a reconnaissance mission in Petén, Guatemala’s northern jungle department. The US Embassy said on Sunday 11 October that the Petén reconnaissance mission gathered data for future combined training against drug cartels. For US readers, it shows Washington’s anti-cartel campaign moving from conference declarations to planning on the ground in Central America.
The trip was led by Jorgan Andrews, the chargé d’affaires who heads the US Embassy in Guatemala City. He was joined by members of Joint Task Force-Bravo and by the embassy’s defence attaché, Colonel Rubiano.
Prensa Libre, a Guatemala City daily, reported that personnel from the Guatemalan Army also took part. It said the combined training planned for Petén would focus on the fight against drug trafficking.
What the Embassy Said
The embassy announced the mission in a post on X. “This operation gathered data for future combined training under the Americas Counter Cartel Conference (A3C) initiative,” it wrote in Spanish.
“United for regional security and to combat transnational threats,” the post added. The embassy did not give the date of the visit or name the places the team inspected.
Radio station La Red 106.1 reported that the Guatemalan Army described the United States as a key strategic partner and ally. The army said the relationship helps consolidate a shared commitment to regional security.
Joint Task Force-Bravo is a US military command based at Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras. Its US Army and Air Force units fly helicopter, medical and relief missions with partner countries across Central America.
In recent months its aircrews have supported a Honduran-led medical mission and delivered water tanks to remote villages in Panama, according to US military releases.
How the Anti-Cartel Push Began
The A3C label refers to the Americas Counter Cartel Conference. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth hosted the conference at US Southern Command headquarters in Doral, Florida, on 5 March 2026.
Guatemala’s Defence Minister, Henry Sáenz, attended, according to the state news agency AGN. Sáenz heads the Defence Ministry in the government of President Bernardo Arévalo.
“Guatemala is present as a state committed to the defence of the Western Hemisphere,” Sáenz told the meeting, AGN reported. He said cartels erode sovereignty, distort economies and infiltrate state institutions.
Prensa Libre reported that the United States and nearly 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries signed a joint security declaration there. Mexico, Colombia and Brazil did not send delegations, the paper said.
Sáenz used the event to showcase Operation Cinturón de Fuego (“Belt of Fire”). It is a military deployment to tighten control of Guatemala’s border with Mexico, which he called the most porous and dangerous.
On 9 March, La Hora quoted Sáenz as saying in a radio interview that Washington had lifted a 50-year block. It had barred Guatemala from buying US military equipment. He said the army had about Q400 million (about US$52 million) for such purchases in 2026.
That conversion uses the Bank of Guatemala’s reference rate of 7.64157 quetzales per US dollar for Monday 12 October.
The purchases have since begun. On 21 September, AGN reported that Sáenz had received a shipment of US weapons after what the agency called a 47-year embargo.
Why Petén Matters
Petén covers Guatemala’s far north and borders both Mexico and Belize. Its large forested areas and long, thinly guarded frontier make it hard to patrol.
Pressure on the border rose in February. Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, died in a Mexican security operation in Jalisco.
Prensa Libre reported at the time that Guatemala then reinforced San Marcos and Huehuetenango, its western border departments, under the same operation. Sáenz said no Mexican armed groups had been detected inside Guatemala.
US forces already train in Petén. US Army photos show Green Berets of the 7th Special Forces Group training Guatemalan Kaibil special forces in Poptún, Petén, in March.

What It Means for You
For travellers, nothing changes for now. No authority has announced restrictions around Tikal, Flores or other visitor areas of Petén. Anyone heading there should still follow the latest US State Department advice.
For people tracking US policy, the Petén reconnaissance mission shows how the anti-cartel agenda is being put into practice. Planning teams on the ground usually come before exercises, equipment deliveries and longer cooperation deals.
For investors and businesses, closer security ties may strengthen Guatemala’s standing in Washington. Better control of the northern border could also help trade and tourism.
There is a counterweight. Foreign military activity is a sensitive subject in the region. In Chile and Peru, critics have questioned what US-led security pacts mean for national sovereignty.
What Is Not Known
The embassy has not said when the visit took place or which sites the team visited. Neither government has published a date for the training.
It is not known how many US personnel would take part or which Guatemalan units would join them. Nor is it known how long they would stay. No budget for the exercises has been disclosed.
The colonel’s full name has not been published. Nor have the exact terms of Guatemala’s commitments under the March declaration.
The sources reviewed by early Monday 12 October include no separate Defence Ministry statement detailing the mission.
