Why Cris Collinsworth Thinks Aaron Rodgers Would Make a Perfect Commentator

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is more than likely playing his last NFL season this year.

The four-time MVP will end a legendary NFL career when he decides to call it quits.

There's become quite the pipeline from NFL players and coaches becoming NFL commentators and analysts. When players or coaches retire, or step away from the game, they tend to find a job in commentating in some capacity. Look most recently at quarterback Russell Wilson, who retired from the NFL in the offseason then landed a job with CBS. Former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also stepped away from the team in January and then accepted a role with NBC Sports.

Would Rodgers follow a similar path? It's hard to say at this point, but NBC's Cris Collinsworth believes the quarterback would be a perfect fit in the broadcasting booth.

Why? Well, Rodgers wouldn't hold back his candid thoughts about situations going on in any given game. He compared him to former tennis star John McEnroe, who became an ESPN commentator.

“The bottom line is, like I always thought that John McEnroe, when he was a tennis announcer, you knew from what he said as a player, like he didn’t withhold anything, right? Officials and whatever, he was gonna let you know exactly what he felt, which is great for a broadcaster, and I think Aaron would fall into that same category,” Collinsworth said during Sunday night's broadcast. “We know at the very least we’re gonna know what he’s thinking.”

Collinsworth makes a great point. Rodgers would not hold back on his opinions during games. But, would Rodgers even be open to being in the broadcast booth? He could definitely take some time off between playing football and becoming a commentator. We could see him in a couple years, similarly to what Tom Brady did when he retired from the league.

It's also more likely Rodgers would take a studio job over a broadcast booth job at this rate. It'd be hard to see Rodgers doing what Brady does for Fox, unless he takes a role on a more secondary team.
