October the 14th, 2026 – A natural disaster has officially been declared for the municipalities of Milna and Nerežišća on the island of Brač after the recent fire.
Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban has issued a Decision on the declaration of a natural disaster caused by fire for the area of the municipalities of Milna and Nerežišća. Morski reports that all affected people and legal entities are invited to report any and all damage to their properties as soon as possible, and no later than the 20th of October.
The Prefect issued the Decision on the declaration of a natural disaster caused by fire for the area of the Municipality of Milna and the Municipality of Nerežišća on Monday the 12th of October, according to a statement from Split-Dalmatia County.
By the Prefect’s decision, the municipal commissions for assessing damages in the affected municipalities are tasked with urgently carrying out all actions prescribed by law, processing the reports and entering the data into the national Register of Damages.
The fire that struck the wider Milna area caused extensive damage and directly threatened human and animal lives, homes, cars and other property, not to mention hotels and resorts who were forced to evacuate their tourists. It marked a summer in which the Croatian coast burned in a way that was deeply concerning.
Despite wildfires being the unfortunate norm in the tinder dry, scorching hot Dalmatian landscape in summer, the situation both on the island of Brač and across the channel on the mainland in Omiš stood out in all the wrong ways. Fires up in Zadar which were deliberately caused also threw a new angle onto an already tragic summertime reality.
