The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) released on Wednesday a satellite map showing the spread of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island following its explosive eruption on October 10.
According to PhilSA, elevated SO2 concentrations were detected near the volcano following the eruption, with the emissions spreading northwestward and potentially affecting air quality in nearby provinces.
“The heightened SO2 concentrations were observed in the vicinity of Kanlaon upon eruption and spread northwesterly on 11-12 October, possibly affecting the air quality in some areas of Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, and Aklan,” PhilSA said.
Kanlaon Volcano experienced a brief explosive eruption on Saturday, October 10, lasting from 12:46 p.m. to 12:48 p.m.
PHIVOLCS reported the eruption, which was followed by episodes of ash emission from Sunday to Monday.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the eruption opened a pathway for volcanic gases and fine ash to escape into the atmosphere.
PHIVOLCS continued to monitor the ash emissions following the explosive event.
PhilSA said the data used to map the SO2 emissions were obtained from the Sentinel-5P satellite, which uses an optical imaging spectrometer to identify gases based on their unique spectral signatures.
“SO2 is primarily used to detect and track volcanic plumes because it is released during volcanic eruptions, and it occurs in low concentrations in clean air,” the agency explained.
