KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) will challenge the Registrar of Societies' (RoS) decision to cancel its registration and seek a stay pending the court's decision.
Describing the move as an abuse of power, its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan accused the government of acting out of fear of losing power and attempting to weaken its political opponents ahead of the Melaka election.
"PN condemns this action as an attempt to pre-empt the court's consideration and weaken political opponents ahead of the Melaka election.
"A government confident in the legality of its actions should be prepared to defend its decision before a judge, rather than changing the status of the parties when an application for a stay is about to be heard," he said in a statement.
He called on the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) to explain the decision in light of its position during PN's stay application hearing, scheduled for Oct 22.
"PN urges the Attorney-General to explain the action in light of the position taken by his office in court during PN's stay application hearing on Oct 22, 2026.
"PN will also take action against all parties who insult or undermine the judicial process," he said.
Takiyuddin said the cancellation came just two days before the Kuala Lumpur High Court was due to hear PN's stay application, after the A-GC had insisted on an inter partes hearing.
He said PN's written request on Oct 14 for no further action pending the hearing had gone unanswered. In its submissions on Oct 19, the A-GC had described the cancellation process as "still ongoing" but did not inform PN that the decision would be implemented the following day.
"A government that respects the rule of law should allow the court to decide on the application and explain why even two days could not be allowed to pass," he said.
Takiyuddin said the timing raised questions about possible bad faith and political motives, adding that the RoS notice was issued on Sept 22, the day the dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly was announced. The cancellation came just 11 days before nomination day.
He urged PN members and supporters to remain calm, comply with the law and allow the judicial process to take its course.
Earlier, RoS confirmed that it had cancelled PN's registration, saying the coalition's explanation had failed to refute the grounds for cancellation set out on Sept 22.
